Certainly.. but you're talking insane amounts of work on thousands of packages depending on the current state of the fedora/mandriva arm repos. I haven't looked at them in a long while but they were very sad when I did. The point to easy debian was to add functionality to the devices because of the boatloads of already armized software. That benefit didn't exist with an easy fedora.

Yes. Sorry, I was confused by the last poster's comment. I have corrected my response.

So far, this whole thing feels to me like a decision made by commercial interests who are pretending that it was made by the people. It's a bunch of hype, in other words. I have nothing against Fedora or rpm, it's just not a way I chose to go. I have in the past been interested in Moblin.

Like what I have consistently referred as the takeover of ITT, this is a change that is essentially being forced on the users, meanwhile pretending that it is somehow a popular groundswell.

There was definitely NOT a movement to use rpms. People had no objection to debs.

I agree that RPM's spec files are (or can be) slightly easier to create then .deb files. And that's where most of the good things stop...

I trully hate the Fedora base, I never liked the way Red Hat (or any alike distro) structures there distribution.

Also I think the internal format of .deb is far easier to work with then RPM's.

And yes I'm a long time Debian + *BSD user and I've grown attached to there way of doing things. But this was also the reason why I loved Maemo that much.

Hmm, well yes. I think it is a commercially strategic move, not a technical one. I don't think any one is pretending otherwise. i believe this move is made in order to better compete against Android. The result should be more developers and more devices. That should eventually make the people happy. Or at least I think it should.

Trying to make the deb vs rpm into a technical impediment is a different story. It is more based on love and hate, emotional rather than rational.

Is there any chance we could still vote on this somehow?
This is what is funny, the pretense is that we're this big community, but the important things are rarely voted on by the real community. Maybe they will have a quick vote over on the Moblin site (joke).

Suddenly there will be a huge move and then the community will be asked what color drapes it wants

Again, switching to rpm means nothing more than adding a .spec file to the source tar.gz with all the patches that come in the source .deb, and rebuilding the package with "rpmbuild -ba package.spec". Nothing more, nothing less. You can do that in linux from scratch, if you are so inclined. And yes, building a debian system with rpm just requires adjusting the helper install scripts, which mostly aren't required in rpm.
May be there will be reasons to criticize meego, we'll see in due time, like bloat, bugginess, lack of optimization, whatever, but please, stop the package zealotrism, that's going nowhere.

My question I do you think "more developers" because you are under the (I think mistaken) impression that there are more rpm developers than deb ones?

Or do you think more developers meaning because we are combining Moblin devs with Maemo devs? In this case, I think that would depend on how many maemo devs we lose to the switch. Hopefully not many... but it's possible.

As it is said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Let's say I'm in the other shore of the river.
In the end, it is just what you have grown accustomed with because it is what you know better.

There aren't .deb or .rpm developers. That's just like comparing ".msi" vs ".exe" developers. It is just a way of packaging binaries, a trivial issue in development.

It is more developers because there will be less fragmentation, just one community instead of two. Just one plataform to debug instead of two. Will make things easyer, at least in theory.
