Council is part of the maemo.org community. It is not for MeeGo or Nokia to make "plans" for it. It is for maemo.org to decide what maemo.org wants to do.

Yeah, and that sounds absurdly simple on the surface, but it's still murky to me. But, we'll feel our way through this a day at a time...

Unfortunately Nokia still owns the Maemo trademark and, thus, apparently the maemo.org one, too.

Fortunately, there is an election coming up so we have a predefined process to get community input on these issues...

Unfortunately Nokia owns the maemo.org domain, so technically they have the only say in what happens around here...

Domain ID105692361-LROR
Domain Name:MAEMO.ORG
Created On:07-Feb-2005 16:26:32 UTC
Last Updated On:21-Jan-2009 16:03:41 UTC
Expiration Date:07-Feb-2011 16:26:32 UTC
Sponsoring Registrar:MarkMonitor Inc. (R37-LROR)
Status:CLIENT DELETE PROHIBITED
Status:CLIENT TRANSFER PROHIBITED
Status:CLIENT UPDATE PROHIBITED
Registrant ID:mmr-31461
Registrant Name:Nokia Corporation

EDIT: Unless of course they somehow forget to renew their domain registration on Feb 7, 2011, and someone in the community has an opportunity to seize it

Without getting into the legalities, that's not a problem. Empirically, you can see there is plenty of trademarked software in the world and plenty of communities focused on trademarked software. Second , we know as a practical matter that Nokia is not going to send a C&D to maemo.org.

I suggest we start lobbying to free up the maemo.org trademark.

Not needed or appropriate, domain name is more of an issue. And not the best first reaction to the announcement in any event. Sleep on it...

Sorry to so abrupt, but do you mind getting back to the topic? :-)

Excellent thread to discuss the future of the council: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=528792
To try to find out and discuss what Moblin brings to the table: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=44608

One way to use all the things, which you have already listed in this forum is to compile a list to Nokia and say: look, these are the values/assets/good things the maemo community prefers and does not want to lose. Are you committed to bringing these to meego?

And depending on the answer we can say whether us as a community (or individually) we see a future in meego.
