Yesturday I tried to update my soft. via nokia software updater, and my phone turned off for no given reason just before that an "x"-ed out sim card apeared on the screen, I am sure that my sim card is valid and is working well. What do you think happened????

I think Nokia Software Updater is a total waste of space. Try using flasher instead. Make sure your battery is well charged first though.

OK, but what I realy wanted to know is that if during updating software my phone turns off, is my software permamently damaged because I heard of such things happening....

There's very little chance of permanently damaging the software. The bootloader is all that's required for reflashing, and this doesn't get touched during normal updates. Unless you have a hardware failure, you should always be able to reflash the phone.

No, reflashing should get you back to groovyness, damage is not permanent. There may be some exception, but practically unheard-of.
