LOL that's exactly what we need.... another "MeeGo is the brand an meego is the site and meeGo is the community and Meego is for saying good-bye"-regulation

I don't care. As long as the OS is free and open the domain shouldn't matter.

maybe meego.com will be the more commercial site (like maemo.nokia.com) and maemo.org will be the community part behind meego? that way we could all stay here.. at home.
That would help *me* in many ways but then I'm a tiny rodent in a big sea. Still, I think the idea has merit in general.

Have you tried to type http://ubuntulinux.org ?

They had a problem with http://ubuntu.org

(Anecdote: the owners are related to Barcelona and they asked me whether it was worth contacting them.

At the time it was a big deal. Didn't seem to stop the project's success, though. Nowadays (and since a long time) nobody cares.

I've been bothered about the .com in meego.com about 5 minutes. That is the time I recommend you to spend on this.

That's not great analogue since ubuntu is an actual real word.

MeeGo is a (truly terrible) neologism made by focusgroups and marketeers who apparently forgot to check the web-address situtation.

That's my five minutes spent on the matter.

I believe a shift to a .com site is actually for the better.
Maemo - and soon MeeGo - is not a community-developed, open sourced OS created to provide a free alternative to larger, commercial products and that intend to further enhance it with community developed applications.

Maemo - and soon MeeGo - is a corporate developed OS created to, initially sell Nokia tablets and phones, and soon a number of commerical products. The OS is enhanced by free (I don't know if the OVI store apps are free or not now and/or in the future) applications developed by a community.

I personally think that a .com would had been applicable for maemo and certainly will be for meego.

Even big corporations have better things to do with their money, really.
Well, since meego.com was also pre-owned (according to both WHOIS:

Code:
Registrant:
   The Linux Foundation
   1796C 18th Street
   San Francisco, CA 94107
   US

   Registrar: DOTSTER
   Domain Name: MEEGO.COM
      Created on: 28-FEB-99
      Expires on: 28-FEB-12
      Last Updated on: 15-FEB-10
and the wayback machine) some money had to be spent on "liberating" a domain anyway. Maybe the .com was cheaper, I don't know...
