Ok bear with me I have read the 10 page thread regarding problems with the N900 and I'd like some advice regarding my new phone.

My current grips are this if anyone could reply with information that will help me Ill be very grateful, I used to have the X6 which I thought was a very good phone did the things it needed to do anyway I Understand the OS is new and tbh im a little lost in the complexity of it all!

1) No portrait mode ( I hear a fix for this I cant seem to find it )

2) Being able to send and recive picture messages over the mms settings which i assume is standered in most phones.

3) I currently use hotmail as my IM platform, I see google Skype Jabber etc etc, How do I add the MSN messenger feature to the N900?

4) Updates Im sure there are some updates out there now, do I install them from the phone itself in the updates section? OR is there a more up to date version online?

5) Internet settings that are normaly sent once you turn on the phone I cant find these anywhere on the phone, and I dont know where to go to accsess them on the phone in order to see if there currently correct, im an O2 customer

I realise the N900 is a new product and im happy to wait for issues to be fixed, but the n900 is my first phone back since the 3310 and if u compare the X6 and the N900 its a different beast but I just want to be ableto use it

Ok so a quick update, I have just installed a update which was called 2.2009.51.1 is this the latest update?

It seems to only fix issues with maps?

Does anyone have info on the MMS side of things and how to configure my IM settings

The latest update is a 2010 version, but that's not available in the UK yet. For MMS you'll need to install the fMMS application which is still in extras-devel. For MSN support, you'll need to install one of the plugins for this (there's a few of them in extras-devel and extras-testing). Internet settings should get picked up automatically - I don't think I had to configure anything on mine. You can find them in the Settings application, under "Internet connections" (click on the Connections button, then edit the relevant entry).

BTW - note the warnings on extras-devel and extras-testing. You should be very careful about installing applications from these repositories and make sure you disable the repositories otherwise.

I hear you, but your unlikely going to find your answers in this forum (unless someone can give you a directly link to the discussion) as searching maemo.org is a tiresome procedure.

try these

1/ http://www.google.com/search?client=...UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

2/ http://www.google.com/search?client=...UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

3/ http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&s...q=n900+hotmail

4/ http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&s...&aq=f&aqi=&oq=

5/ http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&s...&aq=f&aqi=&oq=

----

talk.maemo.org i great for talking about stuff - but not so great when a n00b like us, wants to find specific information.

Happy Hunting

Only if you don't use the Power Search button. That'll use Google to search the site & separate the results based on which section of the site they come from.

Also is there a option somewhere to use a standred phone layout text mode instead of the on screen keyboard?

Portrait mode fix isnt out yet, but its there for your dialling pad (for making calls) and for the web browser. For the dialing bad you need to enable it in the settings menu there (click the top of the screen), and for the browser you must press ctrl-shift-o first then it will be activated.

Not sure about that yet, I think I heard of an app coming out that will do that.

Go to the Applications installer and install the Pidgin stuff. Then it will become available as one of your IM clients (click the top of the screen again, where the clock is, and click "availability" once pidgin is installed).

Just install them from the Updates section in the Applications Installer. Thats all. Check regularly, though the phone will check for you from time to time. If you ever see a "!" mark at the top of your screen, it means there are new updates available.

They are in settings, Internet Connections. Play around there and you'll find them.

Enjoy your new phone and when you get to know it, help people too ^^

do you mean like the phones of old??

1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
0

where 1 = abc & 2 = def --> etc etc????

Damn I aint used one of those type phones for nearly 4 years - why would you abuse your self like that - thats like asking if the N900's mic and be used to tap out 'morse code' and use that as your data entry
