But more importantly, would it be something that the "community" could, or "want to", facilitate, or would it have to come from Slingmedia?

For those who don't know about sling, it basically is a box which you connect to both the internet, and your cable/sat feed, and allows your TV/DVR feed to be accessed remotely, via web browser (Win/MAC OS only), or software, on PC or mobile:

If I knew how to code, further than being able to print my name all over the screen in BASIC, on a TRS-80, I'd be all over this myself, but unfortunately, that's as much as I could do.

Alternatively, web access is available, however there are a few plugins which need to be installed, which may be JAVA or Flash based...I don't remember.

As I understand it, Sling uses VC-1, but within their own, proprietary transport protocol. Reverse engineering that protocol might be possible, of course, but beyond the technical difficulties, that path is likely littered with hungry lawyers.
