From my experience, when I connect to the internet through 3G, even if I don't have IM, email or any program who uses internet connections on the background, I still get about 6/7 hours of battery. If I connect to the internet only when I need it, I can have 2 days of (moderate use) battery. Some of my friends have Android devices (HTC Magic and Nexus one) which opens IMAP IDLE connections and are constantly connected to IM through 3G and their batteries last for a day, which leads me to the conclusion that currently maemo isn't performing much power saving when connected to internet through 3G. I expect PR1.2 brings some good improvements on this area.

Your device is not working correctly. Either you are actually in a spotty coverage area and the device is rapidly flipping in and out of 3g, or something else is horribly wrong. In a strong 3G (TMobile) area if I just leave my n900 powered on connected to 3/3.5G, with 3 email accounts (1 exchange, 2 via nokia messaging push) it can go 24+hours. As in, I remember on sunday that I've not plugged it in since end of the day @ work Friday, and it's still quite alive and kicking.

[spotty area coverage btw, device is fine]

I assure you the 3g coverage in my area is great. Even I would say, my friends (those with Android devices) have the same operator (Vodaphone Spain) and live really close to me ( for about 200m ). Even with a fresh flashed firmware (with no apps installed out of extras) I have these same numbers.

My battery gives me about +-12 hrs.

Wifi at home, Wifi at work, (on 3G or GPRS)
skype always on,
No RRS readers
I make 2 or 3 - 5min GSM calls a day
if I chat on skype for more than 30 minus my battery life is less.
screen is dim,
I seldom get SMS or Skype IM
I sync about 2wice a day
I brows for about 45 minuets a day
i listen to about 50 minus of MP3 Audio or radio.
if I use the camera or the GPS I will get about 8 hrs.of use

Well, then the possibility of bad hardware should be explored. If you just power it on, with no live widgets, but a 3g data connection, and you don't do anything to it it should easily last 24+ hours. Of this I am very sure. My n900 drops about 30% in charge in the 16 hours it is off charger but not much used. Every single day.

I don't know ifyou guys have firefox installed...but when I was looking into battery issues last night (I recently got my n900 and wasn't happy with the battery on edge) - I found a thread on here where users noticed that uninstalling firefox and mozilla boosted their battery. I did that last night and my battery today has been significantly better. And yes kali you need to update your firmware via flashing it.

This is a quick bump, and an analysis of the data so far.

Well there isn't enough hard line data to be sure, but the figures point in the general direction that an unstable network signal on 3G does partially contribute to poor battery life. Hopefully we will get more votes to confirm this, but it might be worth pointing this out to everyone - Use 2G (GSM) mode whenever you are not browsing, at least for now.

I will be filling in more info as I continue my investigations, but please vote if you haven't already
