EDIT: This thread is missing a Brainstorm link!

I think that Ubuntu One cloud access would be great. It would not only be super useful for us on the N900, but it would be a great marketing tool. I'm (almost) sure it would be picked up by major blogs, something Nokia, us end users and cell phone developers could get behind.

I would imagine a little cloud icon in the status menu.

I also would imagine that a port of this wouldn't be very hard.

p.s. This is my first post in brainstorm, I hope it's in the proper format. Forgive me if it's not, I wanted to shoot this off before I forgot to post.

While I'd love to have Ubuntu One -like synchronization for Maemo, one issue is that UO is based on CouchDB which might not be something you want to run on a constrained mobile device (we did a port of CouchDB to Maemo a few years back and it was very slow).

Some parts of UO provide additional, non-CouchDB synchronization methods including the Tomboy API which Conboy will probably support soon.

One option for achieving Ubuntu One compatibility would be to utilize Midgard as the content repository on Maemo and then use Midgard's support for CouchDB replication protocol to sync with UO.

Another approach to this would be the Social Desktop services that KDE is currently integrating. We already provide a part of those APIs on maemo.org for the new Maemo Downloads installer, so expanding that would be easy.

Thanks bergie, I think that material will help some of my proposal work. I suggest Social Handtop for MeeGo.

I was hoping UO would be the egg to this chicken, but maybe it's more complex than the N900 would want to run.

Perhaps a google docs sync to folder? I know they accept any file, possibly in preparation for more advanced file sync upcoming?

Even an sftp server on the home pc and some sh scripts would give me a drop and go fileshare reducing the amount of manual hardware updating (read: plugging my usb into my N900. /poke texrat) Although this solution would not be sexy imo.

I don't see your problem. If you have a Linuxbox with an IP number, you can just use rsync to transfer files.

You're totally right about this, it is possible for me to do by myself.

I do think that Ubuntu One, would be both extremely useful to many end users, and very valuable to our community as a marketing point.

With the massive influx of netbook users, and the popularity of UbuntuNBR, I think this could be so useful.
