The strange thing is a couple of weeks ago I could not get a internet access in Edinburgh. I get a strong 3g signal but any site I try to visit times-out.

I tried it again when I was in East Lothian (middle of nowhere) and got a strong signal and internet access was fine!

It is still not working in Edinburgh!

it used to be the opposite of this!.

I've had 3G issues with Vodafone in Edinburgh on a Nokia E72, must be Vodafone.

Video calling as in Cellular is not supported on the N900 and to be honest with the moaning from carriers in UK about lack of use I don't see it being a missed feature for most people.

You can use Googletalk for video calls on the N900 though which is also cheaper than a 3G video call with most carriers.
Update, you were right. 3G enabled SIM on the way, although I don't know why Voda did that, but anyhoo - success! Thanks

Vodafone UK in West London (Hammersmith, Notting Hill Gate) here and it's 3 or 3.5G all the way.

Up in East Anglia, mind you, signal is hilariously non-existent, and you can just about get 2G if you sit very still for a while or lean out of a window.

Patchy a few miles north of the south coast, but very good in most of the towns... so Worthing, brighton etc is fine. Chichester seems to be a bit weak...

But where i live and work i get 3g/3.5g fine

I had this misgiving too, at first until I learned to look at the N900 not as the evolution of everything Nokia has ever done for the mobile phones, but instead as their attempt at making a portable computer that also happens to make phone calls..

..yes, I know i bough it primarily on the misunderstanding that it's a phone and the initial diappointment that it's not actually as accomplished a phone as the 5800 or N97 but it does have many amazing computer features that I've now warmed to and these make up for the phone side of things (as in what I've come to expect from a phone) being a bit weak

The diddy keyboard, however, is not one of these amazing features.. I'm hoping for a 3x4 dial pad and T9 style predictive

Yes, but that's because there's nothing actually IN east anglia
The whole county is probably covered by one cell..

Sorry about the delay in replying - didn't see this until just now.

The video quality of the internal cam on the N900, and the N8x0 too actually is not exactly brilliant though. The image is ok but you need decent lighting to make it usable. It's never going to rival a desktop or laptop webcam but then the resolution is rather low. It works for waves and the basics though. Refresh speed is entirely dependant on the sped of the link between the two machines and the loading on your N900 too.

I will check on the 3g capability of my sim card, I may just need a different sim...
Never underestimate the ability of carriers staff to miss the obvious! One of the other guys on here had a similar problem with O2 - they went through lots of mad frantic checking on his account and missed the point that he had been given a 2G sim!
