decided to do it manually, find instructions here:
http://handphone-solution.blogspot.c...0-without.html

ignore the instructions regarding symbian ovi maps. just download the zip files for the countries you need, and then extract them somewhere and copy them in the MyDocs/cities/diskcache folder.

What I don't get is why Nokia make it so complicated in the first place.

Why don't they just have an option in Ovi Maps itself to just "pre-cache region" and show a list of areas you can download - right there on your phone. Even smartphones should do that, bearing in mind they are telling us the N900 is more a computer than a phone, why should we need to use ANOTHER computer to do it? (although the unofficial method we could do directly on the N900 I suppose)

Typical that I spent hours at this two days ago But let's hope it works now, although it seems that some of you still have problems?

To those of you that lost map-data, remember to back up the cities folder manually first. Better safe than sorry

Written from my new and shining N900, a stunning device!

I saw the instruction from nokia website, but it does'nt work for me. Map loader can't detect the n900 on either pc suite mode or mass storage mode.

Thanks, OP. Even though the map loader doesn't work on Windows 7 yet..

Hmm.. Just remembered this is already posted, oh well.
it should work on windows 7 as long as you RUN-it in WinXP compatibility mode
