I was discussing some stuff with a major leather product manufacturer about how leather cases could be designed to be a lot more practical for mobile communicatio devices.

He's agreed to to get our design into production if we could get assurance for 50 pieces minimum. But first we need to design it.

So folks all around the world, put your thinking caps on and come up with ideas that you'd want to see and we'll see what we come up with.

My input:
  • Hole for the earpiece so that i can talk with the flap closed.
  • Hole for the LED notification so that i can see it with flap closed.
  • Hole for microUSB slot and 3.5mm jack accessible while closed.
  • Magnetic locking for flap instead of resistive.
  • Extra space in battery area (depends on thickness of case) to accomodate larger capacity batteries easily.
  • Window to get direct access to microSD.

Using a larger capacity battery along with a leather case allows us to ignore the back lid. Of course we'll have to get the magnetic points on the back right or the microSD card wont be read.

so, you to leave away your n900 backcover and cover your back with this leather case? am i getting the point?
if i do, this is nothing for me, if i don't get it, i'm sorry

Your points sound allright for me, except the larger area for batteries , the direkt acces to micro sd (how should this look? it is under the backcover) and the magnetic lock, since magnets seem to unlock our device

As caesar has said the magnetic locking on some cases (if in the wrong position) has been known to trip the camera and keyboard sensors - making the phone think that either the camera or keyboard is open.

It shouldn't affect the camera - that's done on a light sensor - but it could trigger the back panel removal sensor, causing the memory card to mount/unmount.

Whats wrong with the magnetic locking. we could keep it such that flap opened on the bottom of the phone.

getting the magnetic sensor right for the microSD is another challenge i guess.

the window for the microsd can be similar the small fiber flaps like those on older n series. for instance if we take the noreve case as base the windows could be accessed from beneath th leather when it is opened. am sorry but i cant find th link for th noreve case from my phone.. id reviewed it in jan at my lil blog - a red tradition case.

There's nothing particularly wrong with it - it's just something to keep in mind where you position the magnets.

This may be obvious, but the case will need to open such that if either of these is plugged in, it won't need to be removed to open it.

1- and hole for mic too !
2- agreed
3- hole for 3.5mm jack needs to be large enough for large 3.5mm phone plugs
4- has been discussed, no magnetic flap please
5- I wouldn't buy a case too thick. The original battery is enough for me. I have a 8000mAh power pack in my bag, with a modded micro-USB cable to charge the N900, I rarely need it (needed it twice in about a month).
6- Not sure if it is a good idea. Unless there's a door which triggers the "open back cover" signal on the N900, the µSD could be removed while mounted (not good)

7- Have you thought about the camera ? It still would need the sliding door to trigger the camera sensor in the N900, and to protect the lens when not in use.
