I've just tried searching the forum and the bugzilla for this but can't find a thing. Have a bug where my system sounds (incomming sms & IM, close application, etc) stop working. The only sound I get is a muted beep and vibrate as normal. This is fixed by restarting. Can't seem to pin down which app is causing this if any. Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas what is causing it?

I'm not sure off the top of my head. Have you verified while this is going on that the volume settings in Profiles are still where they should be? (e.g. that the configuration options aren't magically changing, as opposed to it ignoring the config) Also, have you installed anything that messes with profiles or anything related (e.g. Tweakr, etc.)? That'd be my first thought.

thanks for the reply. No, volume settings are all correct. I've even tried changing to silent profile and back but still get no sound. I don't have anything installed that messes with profiles or sounds as such no.

Hmm... can you elaborate on what you mean by a "muted beep"? That might be ringing vague bells in my head, but your description was imprecise. Is it another system sound that is playing in place of what should be (if so, it should be in /usr/share/sounds/ somewhere), or does it appear to be a glitch, or a symptom of the problem itself?

I can't find it in available sms or IM tones, however when I change the tone to something else it starts working again. But the launch app and close app sounds still don't work.
Do I need access to rootfs to access /usr folder?

Interesting... Yes, to access /usr, you'll need to use the terminal (or an alternate file manager, if one is available). If you install mplayer, here's how you can test it.
Code:
$ cd /usr/share/sounds
$ mplayer some_sound_file.ext
where the '$' is the prompt, and the file is one of the files in that folder. You can list all of the files by typing "ls" after the first command, or tap the tab key (on-screen) twice to use autocomplete when executing the mplayer command.
If this sounds complicated, don't worry about it right now. I was asking that out of curiosity, and I could probably ask more useful troubleshooting questions with more sleep. :P

thanks for that. I've gone through a few of the obvious files it might be and can't find a match. I might try a different approach and use recaller to record it then see if you can identify it.
First I'm going to try and trigger the bug as I've restarted...
Get some sleep you've earned it

Ok I've done some more testing. I've discovered this could be a bug with Media Player widget.
Steps:
I start music playback in media player.
return to desktop.
Press pause on media player widget.
All system sounds are muted
If I do the same but pause within media player it's fine
This also happens pausing the music with the Headphone Daemon.

Going to search bugs again now I know its media player specific

Okay... I'll keep an eye on this thread. Hopefully you get it worked out.

Alas, I'm not allowed to sleep, because I have an EEG scheduled to find out why I can't sleep. XD Meh... it gave me an excuse to trawl the forums helping people, so I'm not complaining. Good luck!

Good luck with your EEG, Insomnia sucks!

This is getting more strange now. I decided to delete the media player widget as I was suffering from the known bug of the play button not working. I re added it then pressed play again which seemed to crash the desktop as all icons disappeared :/ Once it had reloaded quite a few of my widgets had disappeared but media player one was still there. How thoughtful. :@

Now the media player widget pause/play works again (for now) I can only reproduce the fault by pausing media player with headphone daemon...
