I have to agree with @el3ctronick that the maploader is NOT working 100% for the N900. I wasted about half a day. Rebooted Windoze XP, rebooted N900 god knows how many times. Suddenly without doing anything different it worked - maploader was able to detect phone. it was map loader version 3.028

ok, enough with every idiot that says there is not a map loader for N900.
Fixed that for you

Maploader works perfectly for me in both XP (where I'm using 3.0.28) and OSX (version 1.1)..

I used Maploader months ago (just after free Ovi maps for S60 was announced) to squeeze the whole of the UK onto my N900 and it worked first time, so it's not true that it doesn't work at all. I used a guide from the forums here - no renaming or extra faffing necessary.

Using:
Windows XP
N900 with Global Firmware

Do those who it doesn't work for have Nokia PC Suite installed? I'd imagine the phone wouldn't be detected in PC Suite mode otherwise as it requires some drivers.

i only got the map loader to work with xp, win 7 64bit had no joy, same goes for NSU, works in XP but not Win7, not sure bout vista!!!

Plus u must have the N900 as a Mass storage device, so when u look in my computer u see to new storage drives, 1 should show a lil pic of the N900... if not unplug and plug back in, this works on a VM machine if u have win7 or having probs with vista install vmware with a copy of xp on it and ur gd ta go!!

The fact that it does not work for you does not mean it fails completely. It works in mass storage mode without fiddling with anything and if you rename the qf file it also works in PC Suite mode.
If you are really interested in getting it working with PCSuite mode then invest a few seconds to rename the file but do not blame others for your lack of interest otherwise.

I'm with the people that say you shouldn't need to rename files to get this program to work.

The PC/OVI Suite is an absolute abomination of software, and it always has been. I can't believe how Nokia can release something so bad with obviously very little testing/QA. I've been using it in it's different incarnations and names for about 8 years and it's never improved. What's with the horrendous skinning as well?

Once again it does work in mass storage mode and this is what Nokia recommends to use:
  1. Download and install the Map Loader application.
  2. Connect through USB (Mass Storage Mode)Open the Map Loader application.
  3. Click on ‘Download’ to transfer selected maps to your device. (Use the +/- controls to pick maps)
So I suggest we stop complaining about features which have never been promised but see them as a valuable addon.
