Anyone help with what appears to be my xterminal not working?

Having used xterminal on a number of occasions before, I am used to it opening and displaying what appears to be called the command prompt and some words like busybox or something.

For some reason, when I now open it, xterminal is blank , the border is the same with with the Ctrl, Tab, Esc (etc) keys on the bottom, but the main screen is just white, no writing. I have rebooted, turned it off etc and nothing works.

I am guessing that something I have installed is conflicting with it - anyone any ideas? I have searched the forums as best I can, and can find no help as to whats gone wrong or what other installations could conflict with it.

I do have a working WinSCP connection (OpenSSH is installed)should I need to edit anything in the N900.

I tried uninstalling all my applications including games etc and then reboot, but no change so I then reflashed the phone with the general release 3.2010.02-8 (I am in the UK using an unbranded N900) which worked perfectly. Immeditaley after this xterminal WAS WORKING but . . . the N900 then carried outs its file restoration from the backup file thus reinstall my application list . . . and after which xterminal again was opening but blank !!!

I do not have either MaemoTools or MaemoExtras-Devel repositories enabled if that helps.

Can someone provide some suggestions - should you need I can post a list of the installed applications

Check your font settings first, it's possible it's working but displaying white text on white background.

A broken theme might also have the same effect. To test, open a new terminal, type a command that generates several lines of output ("dmesg" will do) and press enter. Does the select/scroll toggle button (arrow on the bottom left) appear?

Ima

thanks for your quick reply.

Can you educate me by telling me how i test my fonts - i couldnt find a setting for them?

i did open 'Notes' and start typing, in this program the writing was black on a white background.

Also ur right re ur second test - when i typed in 'dmesg' and push enter, i get the white arrow appear on the bottom lefthand corner of the xterminal window - whats the next step please?

Opening Xterminal and selecting the top menu will open a list of options including Font. At the bottom should be the colours. The first box is for the font colour and the second box is for the background colour.

Hope that helps
