Hello,

I want to announce EasyPlayer, an easy to use music/audio-book player for Maemo 5. You'll find EasyPlayer in extras-devel. It's written in Python, and was packed with py2deb.

Features: It scans automatically the audio files on startup and represents those files in a directory like tree structure. It depends on the filename rather than on the meta tags. It also has a resume play function and a adjustable timeout. Each directory containing audio files is displayed in an own folder, which could be expanded or collapsed. I wrote this primary for listening to audiobooks, but it's (of course) also useable for music. The reason why I'm stay with the filename rather than the meta tags, is that if you encode audio books on CDs (e.g. with CDex), most times the meta tags went wrong and it's much easier to correct the filenames.

Features planned:
  • Save and load playlist (currently it rescans /home/user/MyDocs/.sounds on each startup). This may take while if you really have a lot of music files… Done
  • Scanning of any SD cards
  • Volume bar (use the volume keys to change volume)
  • Use the slider to "sweep" through the audio files Done

Features not planned: A editable playlist. There are other players which support this. Use them. I find it much easier to browse through the dirs and to expand and collapse the folders. Try it and write what you think about it.

Hope you enjoy it, Klaus

Edit: new version 0.3

New Features:
  • Bug fixes
  • Now scan complete user partition, not only dir .sounds
  • Support for auto rotation
  • Load/save playlist. Speeds up starting if you have a lot of audio files. This means also, you have to rescan manually if you add new audio files and after that restart easyplayer. Have to fix this...
  • Now you can press on the progress bar to select position in file

Edit: new version 0.4

New Features:
  • display metatags as an alternate to Filenames while playing
  • rework of preferences and file scanning code
  • added .flac type
  • now recognizes all types in any case e.g. .mp3/.MP3/.Mp3 etc
  • Bug reported and fixed by Frank Boer (FarmerF) (Thanks!): pause eating cpu cycles and no sound output in silent mode
  • other bug fixed and maybe some new introduced

Edit: new version 0.5

After some time, I updated EasyPlayer to version 0.5-2

New Features and removed Bugs:
  • now saves time position on exit
  • removed Stop button. Play button is now Play/Stop. Remembers time/song position
  • removed bug described by eiraku. Please test
  • Added patch by aspidites to use alternate home directory

Hope you enjoy it, Klaus

PS: Please, if you discover bugs, contact me directly via email at klaus (at) rotters (dot) de

Thank you!

Sounds great! I can't find it yet. When will it show up in extras-devel?

It's now on Extras-Devel.
I've installed it. Good and simple player. I like the "stop after" function.

Where did you store your MP3's? It just scans the .sounds subdirectory in MyDocs. Maybe I change this when the next version got the possibility to load / save the playlist.

It should be there. Have you updated your app list?

I'd like to see screeeeeenss before downloading. Always attracts more attention and gives the end-user the ability to "check off" many things they might require from the app.

Well, there isn't much to see. It is not a good "stylish" app. But look here: Picture of EasPlayer. I like the KISS policy: Keep IT Stupit Simple. As I started programming EasyPlayer, there wasn't any player which fits my needs: Easy to use for audio books, fast, timeout, resume, play dirs, because I organize my music/audio books in dirs and filenames rather than in meta tags.

Usually the KISS is the best policy.

Can I really be cheeky and suggest a screen with 3 big buttons; "Previous", "Next", "Play/Pause"?

Something like this would be really handy while listening to music in my car and may be useful to other people.

I find the UI in the existing Nokia player a bit fiddly.

Every time I take my eyes off the road I have to avoid those pesky pedestrians. Especially on the pavement/sidewalk - I just wish they would stop screaming as I drive over them at least I can turn the music up though and drown it out.
