Neither of which have portrait mode! They are both Landscape devices and agree, excellent devices!

okay guys thanks for the initial "its impossible" when it clearly isn't, thanks for the 4 page argument over who said what, thanks for telling me to f**k off and buy an iphone, thanks for making me feel stupid for not being a hardcore linux developer 3 weeks after being introduced to it, thanks for the thrad tags too.

i wanted a device that fits all my needs and the n900 was it, i dont want a laptop, i especially dont want to take one to the pub with me. i dont want an iphone for many many reasons. i dont want to carry 3 devices with me wherever i go. i think it would be nice to hold a pint in one hand without having to give up texting, but it isn't essential, i was unaware merely enquiring about it would cause so much hurt and anguish to so many people.

i understand that resources are stretched, functionality is currently met and even though it would be nice to have portrait text its far from a priority, so the only genuine thanks of this post goes to that one usefel proportionate response, i can only apologise for being so selfish as to say something would be useful.

I couldn't care less what anyone else thinks, I see the N900 as a phone and I use it as a phone. Every person that I have showed the N900 to has perceived it as a phone and this is a common perception among many people who own or have seen the device in stores or in advertisements.
I too would like to have a portrait mode keyboard for conversations and feel that it is reasonable to request this feature.

you couldn't be more wrong, there already exists apps that do portrait mode, the Nokia web browser that comes with the phone has portrait support you just need to enable it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v37TGfA0jQQ
some features wont be able to, but you cant just blindly say that about the whole N900 the existence of an accelerometer should be enough to tell you that it will be available in the future

I don't have faith in an Official release for this. I was actually hoping for a 3rd party solution. Some dude just needs to get into it and work out some magic.

My statement was precise. No Portrait for "Maemo 5". The OS. Global. I didn't say anything about the Apps. This includes and means, the application menu, widget placement, virtual keyboard , status bar placement. No statement to indicate this is even in the plans for Maemo 5. Only Maemo 6. Oh my bad. Meeeego

By all means, i'd love to be wrong

TBH i'm not bothered whether the solution comes from nokia, Bob the office supplies manager who likes to code for fun during his lunch break, or if its handed down from god written on tablets of stone. and if bob is reading this i'd be happy to throw a couple of quid in your direction via paypal!

Sometimes you just cant type with two hands, this is why it'd be perfect just to flip the phone and have a t9 touchpad to type on, its already implemented in the phone application so why not just implement it into conversations.

Thanks for being polite and also reading what was posted. A lot of people seem to forget that Maemo is not all of Nokia so resources are indeed truly stretched very thin.

Whilst the built in conversations application is landscape and closed source there is some work going on to provide SMS through other means in a manner that will integrate and not break the phone. This is not a Nokia effort (unless I've missed something) but a 3rd party community effort. As this is totally voluntary and unpaid I am glad users such as yourself take the time to post and show that there are people out there both appreciative and polite.

I don't think anyone reasonably thought, or stated that your idea was selfish, though one person might have thought that.

The reason that there is no statement to say it is in the plans is because the roadmap says it isn't a universal feature of Maemo 5 but the OS supplies the necessary hooks to allow applications to take advantage should they wish to.

Universal UI rotation was discussed at length on here but the obvious issues of how to rearrange the desktop on rotation was a stumbling block. Symbian gets around this issue by not allowing such flexible placement of widgets and gadgets on the desktop. If you can think up a suitable solution then I am sure people would love to hear it and work on a possible implimentation with you: suggest a new thread to gain best possible reception though.
