I've opted for a 'Rumors' thread here:

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=47497

I'd like all these nonsense postes moved to a rumors section.

A simpler solution is described in this thread:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=48148&page=2

However, it sunk down because the "active threads" show mostly the new trolling...

Actually i was thinking about a separate section for trolls. That would make the off-topic section a nicer place for random talk.

and most of us can detect a troll thread in the first post, so maybe the onus should be on us - the members - to pass the threads on by.

we run the risk of alienating real talent because we develop a reputation for being a dictatorship rather than a freedom-of-speech democracy.

just my op
That is ludicrous.First of all, fora are NOT democracies. Maybe benevolent dictatorships at best which I am perfectly fine with. You have no right to post on this or other fora - it is a privilege which can be revoked. As for trolls being useful, I see zero evidence of that. Disruption and argumentative whining never lead to anything positive.

No reason to lump joke threads in with trolling. I don't see any real harm in April Fool's jokes. Heck, Google renamed themselves "Topeka" for a day and I didn't see anything break.

But complaints about true trolling do have merit IMO.

No, I love to read stupid things all day long
I don't think this is really the best answer.....
Most of the crap I read on here is from genuine users who feel they have been ripped off. They aren't here to cause a fuss they just want what they paid for and this is just their place to vent their frustration. Sure its not the most intelligent thing to do but it happens none the less. This thread is useless imo, If you don't like them, don't reply.

Having only been here a short while I've learned to recognize troll threads. In the beginning I admit to having fed them mainly due to their visibility. However, I now mostly ignore them. As others have said, self moderation is the key - troll ignoring causes them to loose interest.

I think there are also various newbie posts which are considering the same as trolling as the person so obviously hasn't searched for the answer to the topic first - part of this is obviously laziness on the part of those people but I don't think that the "quality" (ahem) of the Search function helps... It takes a while to realize that Power Search is much more useful.

Jokes are good but repeated jokes are tedious!

So, I guess my view can be summed up as:

- Starve the Trolls

- Attempt to be nice to newbies for a short while (even if them make exceedingly dumb posts) unless they prove themselves to be trollish

- Perhaps try and restructure the forum presentation in some way so that searching is easier and troll spawn doesn't dominate?

- Only post a joke if it's funny and hasn't been done before

(Oh, and I think the poll attached to this thread is too simplistic so am not taking part)

First of all, whether they were ripped off or not is debatable and, frankly, irrelevant. That is why almost every vendor has a return policy. This is a COMMUNITY site. Not a place to vent their frustration. If they want to vent they should go over to the official Nokia forum and leave the community alone.
