i got it to work. kept it in the charger overnight. had a full charge this morning. backlight was flickering faintly for a few moments after turning on, but after 4 hours of constant use, it appears to be solid. typing reponse from unit as we speak.
installing repositries and packages now. waiting on the 2gb mmcmobile card to arrive as well.

That's not right even on an empty charge they should have worked when plugged in, they are LED's not florescent lights, so the flickering seems extremely suspicious; I've never seen that comment made on the forum. I would suggest sending it back to buy.com for a new one because i suspect you're going to have problems again in the future and the last thing you want to deal with is Nokia support!

I just got my 770 right off the delivery truck today. Brand new unit from Buy.com (untampered Nokia circle sticker)
I haven't used it for more than 25 minutes and the backlight just died on me.
First, I unpacked the unit, placed the battery into the device, plugged a/c adaptor into the wall, let it sit to charge for 5-10 minutes.
Then I power on the device. I was greeted with time/date, language settings, then phone connection settings. Here, I was trying to tether bluetooth between the 770 and my phone.
In between the 'searching' after clicking 'previous' to 'next' about 5 to 6 failed tries to detect the phone, the backlight just went dead.
I canceled everything else and was brought to the main screen. Now, I would have to put it in direct light to see a faint image of the desktop.
I powered down the unit, reseated the battery, powered it up, still the same. The lcd is faintly dim without backlight.
I navigated my way to 'control panel' > 'display' and backlight is all the way maxed and sleep is on default settings.
I turned the unit off, plugged it into the a/c adaptor, let it sit for a good hour, and still no backlight.
Any suggestions is appreciated on what to do now. Thank you. :x
Update: Called Nokia, they recommended flashing the unit. I did that. Still no backlight. I may have to do an RMA with Buy.com. Is there a such thing as a hard switch to toggle the backlight on and off? Or something that is not documented in the user manual?
