Nokia's got plenty of good reasons for discouraging overclocking:

1. It could increase warranty claims (additional CPU failures, even if rare, may not just be statistical noise)
2. Reduces the likeliness of users buying the next device that comes out

On the other hand, that the n900 is so open increases their sales and the number of dedicated supporters/hackers like us. In theory might also generate some sales from those of us ethical enough to buy a new one when/if we brick ours. I surely wouldn't make a warranty claim after frying mine.

They're just being responsible by warning us. And in the end, we're sliding down the bleeding edge, because that's our move.

Quite frankly I wish more companies would take their attitude:

Permit all, but warn loudly

INSTRUCTIONS FOR FLASHING FROM A PC
__________________________________________________ __
1: download and install maemo_flasher-3.5
Flasher download: http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/maemo-dev-env-downloads.php

2: download and put the kernel image in the flasher directory on your PC (C:\Program Files\maemo\flasher-3.5\). Make sure you save the file with no extension ie.txt at the end. Just leave it as 'zImage-800mhz'
Kernel image download: http://www.saunalahti.fi/crailt/

3: turn off your device

4: hold the 'u' letter and plug in the usb cable. PC should detect the phone in flasher mode. You should now see a 'USB' icon in the top right of the nokia screen.

5: type this command in Maemo Flasher 3.5:
___________________________________

flasher-3.5 -k <path-to-image> -f -R
___________________________________

example: flasher-3.5 -k zImage-800mhz -f -R

6: your done should take 1 second

__________________________________________________ __

Tip
**Flash your kernel to run this image 'zImage-800mhz' way less chance of your device overheating and causing damage. any higher and you are one crazy bastard

Caution
**Stay away from any files which end in ‘dsp’ unless you know what you are doing.
**Avoid using any kernel which runs the device at more then 900mhz unless you know what you are doing.
**better yet stay away from any overclocking unless you understand the risk of what you are doing.

I followed the tutorial to add heat indicator. but mine keeps saying -40 i dont think this is right? What can cause this problem?

I also opened temp1_input with leafpad and it says -40 there too

Mine did the same thing for several hours, then just started working.

After uninstalling maemo-kernel-flasher and rebooting, my N900 wouldn't boot up. Basically, bricked.

I flashed the kernel via USB from my PC and now it boots back up. Phew.

I thought it had something to do with the lowered min speed limit from 250 to 125.

I'm thinking of flashing back to the stock kernel, then either use Titan's kernel and the trick to make changes stick and not disappear after a reboot, this will get me the 250 lower limit and a boost on the upper clock speed.

Edit : I've flashed back to stock kernel then installed Titan's version (big thanks to him) and set the Min/Max scale limits to 250 / 750 (by editing the /etc/pmconfig file) instead of 800, now the "dmesg | grep WARNING" command doesn't return anything and things are running smoothly enough, the "about" page is fine and will be testing with the Audio books later on to see if I'm over the stuttering problem.

if someone from the gurus can confirm and explain the messages returned by the "dmesg | grep WARNING" to just simply be warnings and not a sign of something much worse, I think I'll up the speed to 800 back again, but until then 750 is good enough for this trooper, like they say "just because you can doesn't always mean you should"

Indeed.
The thing is that one piece of silicon isn't ever the same and i have learned this hard way by broking my new computer 5 years ago by tiny first try increse to the clockspeed.
Compared to my year old E8500 that i have been able to do pretty much anything.

There's a reason why Droid is running at 550mhz and N900 at 600mhz. It would be crazy for Nokia to not say no for the overclockers, but of course that doesn't mean your N900 shouldn't work at 900mhz(like mine has for couple of days).

Thought it's no use to come here cry if you fock it up.

If your Settings - About Product is showing <unknown> after kernel mod:
1. Launch xterminal
2. sudo gainroot (assuming you have rootsh installed)
3. apt-get install --reinstall mp-fremantle-generic-pr
4. reboot
note: This does not touch the overclocked kernel. So can be done with either modded or non-modded kernel. Only updates the version information.

You are fully responsible for any damage caused by overclocking. Not anyone else.
There is something wrong with "apt-get install --reinstall..." command you gave. I solved this by :

Command : "dpkg -l | grep mp-fre"
Produced : "ii mp-fremantle-002-pr 3.2010.02-8.002"

So I did :
1. apt-get update
2. apt-get install --reinstall mp-fremantle-002-pr"

And it worked - Now about info is correct - I am not sure why I have 002 and you have generic.
Maybe add it to the original post?

Thanks for all the kernel mods guys,
I installed 800 MHz with the transitions.ini, and the phone is very much IPhone like smooth which makes me happy.
This was the only thing left bugging me with the N900 since fMMS because so good.
Now I just need PR1.2 to fix the bluetooth problems, (BH-100), and night mode for the camera and i'll be sleeping like a baby.
