Documenting this for others to find in case they have the same issues....

1-week old 770 (latest OS2006 firmware) which worked very nicely in my home with a Linksys WRT54G router in WPA-PSK mode. That is, worked very nicely for about 5 days and then stopped working (read on).

Configured to run under DHCP.

Configured to work with a cell phone (Treo 650), home Wi-Fi network, and my work Wi-Fi network (another Linksys router). All worked fine for a few days, then kablooooey!

Connectivity through the home Wi-Fi network to the outside work no longer works with 770. I am able to get connected to the network, but I can't get to the outside world. Well, with one significant exception! Internet radio still works beautifully. But web browsing, email, Gizmo, and RSS feeds all claim a "network problem" or other such equivalent-sounding thing.

Connectivity to internal network systems work just fine, but outside the walls, they do not work (again, except internet radio).

Tried resetting modem, router, and 770 numerous times, but to no avail. Tried deleting all the connectivity accounts and set up a new one (with a totally different name). Tried clearing the entire cache of everything in the browser.

Tried pulling the battery and power cable for over a hour.

Tried running with a static IP instead of DHCP. Tried setting up connectivity with my router under a new connectivity account but removing all security (no WEP, no WPA, nothing).

None of any of the above steps gets my browser or other apps to work! But, again, Internet radio still keeps chugging along fine when I want to test connectivity to the outside world. Interestingly enough, I can still connect to my WPA-PSK-protected work network and through my Sprint session on the Treo 650.

Even more interesting is the fact that I can disconnect my Sprint session on the Treo 650 and I can continue to surf using my home wi-fi network, but only the domain that I was currently on (using the Sprint session). For example, if I surfed on Sprint to FoxNews, then I would be able to disconnect Sprint, connect my home WiFi, and continue to surf FoxNews domain sites. Any other site would result in "network error" messages. Sounds like a DNS-caching issue to me. If I am on the domain with my Sprint account, it seems to let me continue surfing through Wi-Fi on that domain. As soon as I step outside that, it causes me to get these network errors. Not sure why the internet radio continues to work, though.

It appears as though either the browser cache, IP stack, or WiFi stack on the 770 is corrupted or otherwise hosed.

Sadly, I don't really have a fix for this and it renders the device essentially unusuable in my home! I have yet to go as far as reflashing the original, but it seems as though that might be my only next step....and possibly my LAST step with the Nokia Internet Tablet "family of products."

They definitely have something wrong with the connectivity stack and there is no way that they should let this continue! It appears as though this also happens on model 800 units as well as numerous model 770 units. I can't believe that they are pulling support for an 18-month-old device like thiis!

Thanks for listening.

(Obviously, if you have something new for me to try, then let me hear so. But, otherwise I was just writing this for other people's benefit, should they be experiencing similar behaviors.

try doing a full reset of your MODEM. That means, locate the recessed button and use a paper clip...hold down on the reset button for 10 secs and release. After that, if you need to, re-enter your login details and see if this solves the problem. If not, then do a full reset on your router (using the same method, looking for the recessed button.....).

I solved 2 wierd issues like this over the past month. Even after fixing it, I'm not sure why it happened in the first place, but everything seems to be working fine now for those 2 instances.

Sounds more like you have a proxy server entered in somewhere on the 770.
Check your settings, and did you install privoxy by chance? I'm not sure if you know what a proxy server is, but there's a 99.99% chance you aren't running one.
If you can't find it, you will probably have to reflash the device.

Well, my modem is one of the old Motorola Surfboards and it has no hard reset button (at least that I can find). I did reset the modem from its configuration web page, I did reset the router, and I have no proxy server. This is incredibly strange. I will attempt a reflash. Ugh.

Thanks for the comments.

Sounds exactly like the problem I was having. If you find a solution let me know.

I ended up getting a new wireless router and it worked fine.

TThe bit about the same site suggests a problem with dns. So does the internet radio part, as plain ip addresses are often used here instead of domain names. Try manually setting DNS
server on 770 to your router's ip, or to 4.2.2.2 or opendns's servers. (or try double-checking to ensure it is automatic) If the DHCP process takes a while, it could finish before completion. The router replacement/hard reset of all settings may also fix this...

You don't have a WiFi issue.

You have an improperly set up network. Don't blame the N800.

rider is right, your wifi seems fine if you can get internet radio

In re to dns issues as well, try putting the ip address of a site in the address bar see if that comes up with anything.

try bbc 212.58.224.131

or it forums 66.98.176.25

Or A reset of your router back to factory standards would undo any accidental changes made to its routing instructions!

good luck

Well, a couple more people chimed in and I'll add my experience from the past 48 hours.

I finally did a reflash of the Nokia 770 (not an 800) and that solved the problem! I was pretty happy for about 36 hours as it worked like a charm again. I downloaded and installed some apps, configured my system, and was generally enjoying life with this toy again.

BUT, the dreaded problem has cropped up once more. I agree that it is not a Wi-Fi issue anymore (guess I should retitle the thread?). But, this time, I cannot access Internet radio, email, Mapper, or the Internet -- anything external to my LAN. I can access intranet sites such as my router's configuration page, remote desktop to a server in the house, Canola talking to a media server in the house, etc.

So, somewhere along the way....either in the 770, router, or modem, I am getting messed up. Like I said before, I did a factory reset on the router and I did a "factory reset" through the configuration page for the modem, but this didn't work. The only thing that fixed it before was a reflash of the 770. Thus, this tells me that it must be something in the 770....or some incompatibility between the 770 and the other components upstream.

The only thing that I can think was common to both this time and the last time it happened was at the moment it flaked out, it was doing a lot of data transfers and got hung up. This time, I was using Mapper and had the Internet radio going in the background. And, it got hung up to the point that I just shut down as much as I could and then restarted the 770. So, perhaps I am leaving it in a "bad state." I just wish I knew what I could do to "clear" the IP stack or whatever is going on here.

(By the way, for the other suggestions made....I had already tried assigning manual IP addresses [including DNS] to the 770 to see if it would work again, but no go.)

FYI....interestingly enough, I am able to get to sites using their IP address. I tried the BBC and it shows me the "BBC homepage" in the window title bar but takes FOREVER to load (but on my wireless laptop, it is super fast).
