For MSN: download aMSN (ok, it's very slow with connections, but... it works)

We want something that works right, not only under certain circumstances, that eliminates both of those. I dont have a msn screenname and most of my friends dont either. Gtalk is crap when it comes to video on the n900. Some of my friends didnt even know about gtalk, so getting them to sign into their gmail to use gtalk was kind of annoying for them. These are not solutions.

We need video call capabilities.
We need skype video chat since it is built in already.
Flash webcam support would be nice but I hear its a hardware limitation, still, not an excuse to not have it enabled at all.

I have actually managed to get failry decent quality from my front camera in good lighting so I know the problem isnt just quality concerns.

Even like 1 fps video would be a start for streaming. Heck, I can do way better than that with Qik.

+1 and we want it now.
Maybe I'm just paranoid but does anyone else get the feeling that companies (like Fring) are waiting for Meego before building any more apps.

I asked the Fring team about the support for Fring on the N900.
This is what they replied:

Hello,
Thank you for contacting our support team.

fring is not officially supported on the N900. The version should be out soon.

However, if you'd like to try out the Alpha version you can do that by enabling the Maemo extra catalog on your N900 and install fring through this repository.
You can find more details here:
http://mynokiamobile.org/2010/02/01/...ur-nokia-n900/

I'd like to emphasize the fact that the version is still for testing purpose only. If you don't feel comfortable enough to do that we advise you to wait for the official release.
We will not be able to give any support for this version.

If you have further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Thank you,
Dafna

hm none of my friends are using gtalk.

why doesn't skype support it? it is available on all desktops, a lot of people are using it and it is able to handle video chats. hmmm.... strange.

Nothing strange. Guys, we've been over this quite a few times. Skype simply does not support video calls on mobile platforms. ANY mobile platform. Really, it doesn't (nor did they promise if and when it will). The N900, Maemo, Nokia have little to do with that.

I heard the next update should have video chat capabilities. There is also a thread around here talking about using google talk for web chats if the other person initiates it and they are on a pc. I havent tried it yet.

I want fring to work so i can tranfer files via instant messenger. I haent found a way to do this yet

Ah, but isn't the N900 a "desktop computer in your pocket"?

hmm maybe the idea is right and the first approach should be to get the smaller camera to work with these flash plugins such as in Chatroulette. (see other topic for that) http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=605904

No, it's a mobile computing platform with a web browser capable of giving an experience similar to desktop computers.

The problem regarding Skype is that the protocol is proprietary & there needs Skype to do it. Maybe worth asking them directly?
