I have some RVMB (Real Video) files which I tried to convert using Total Video Converter V3.10 to various formats, but most of them (MPEG4, 3gp, avi, H.263 etc.) would not play on my N800, even though these video formats are listed under the N800 product specifications. And I couldn't play the unconverted RVMB file as well, even though N800 supports RV.

The only format that works is Mpeg1, but the resolution on playback, especially on full screen is still bad, even if high-resolution encoding is chosen.

It is a pity that I cannot watch good-resolution videos on my N800.

Just how to convert videos, and in which format, that will work best for N800 for a very good video quality playback?

Here's how I transcode my videos.

1.) Get Mencoder here:

http://www4.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/rel...w32-1.0rc1.zip

2.) Run this command line to transcode.

mencoder "Inputfile.avi" -o "OutPutFile.avi" -srate 44100 -oac mp3lame -lameopts vol=7:vbr=0:br=96 -af volnorm -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=600 -vf-add crop=812:480 -vf-add scale=400:240 -ofps 14.985 -ffourcc DIVX -noidx -force-avi-aspect 1.69230769230769

If you want to transcode a movie from dvd, then run the above
for all of the *.VOB files on the DVD. Then join the resulting avi files into one.

mencoder -oac copy -ovc copy -o "out.avi" "VTS_01_1.AVI" "VTS_01_2.AVI" "VTS_01_3.AVI" "VTS_01_4.AVI"

cmideiros: you may be interested in my 770-encode which basically allows you to shortcut all those commands.

Greetings.. I have had very good results using this method for video capture.. then playback on my N800.

I use one of my pc's as a PVR.. it is a simple machine
AMD 1800+
512mb ram
40gb hd
ATI All in Wonder 9600pro
Windows xp pro.

I have my Shaw Cablebox connected to the "video input" of the ATI's input dongle using Composite video. (you could do this with a dvd player/vcr/etc.

More importantly the PVR software that comes with the default is setup as this:
Video format - MPEG-1, NTSC(525) 480X240
Audio format - 44,100khz, 16bit, Stereo
frame sequence settings - Number of P frames 4, Number of B frames 2
Max Bit Rate 2.42 M Bit/Second
Target Bit rate 1.34 M Bit/Second
Motion Estimation Quality 30
Audio encoding 160k Bit/Second
"video soap" none

The finished video is playable immediatley on the N800.. but does not play "well" in the default Media player that comes with the N800 firmware... Instead I use the downloadable "mplayer" for the N800, and it plays without a hitch with that program.

here is a sample of a video recorded in that format as taken from my DVD player connected to the Ati.

4.2mb file that shows some vid quality and the audio quality.. comming from the stereo speakers on the N800 it sounds good.
