@giannoug - Five months ago if I'd have known about the app and platform situation as it is now, my purchasing decision might have been different. Probably true for many other users.

I guess with 'Nokia' you assume that even if it is a new development the systems will be in place to provide for you. The N900 just seems to be one of those devices that has no recognition outside of these forums.

Why does the OP want us to know this?

Completely false.

Once again, as I have already explained to you etuoyo: it is all about the approach.

The goodbye/vanity threads have just gotten old. No reason to create a new one every time someone switches devices-- tack onto one of the many threads exactly like it instead.

I'll never defend extremists from either side in these pointless exchanges, but I continue to wonder what some people expect in a community forum designed around Nokia products.

Before I bought my N900 I had to choose between 3 phones. N900, an Android I can't even remember and the iPhone 3GS. I don't care about the apps and I never play games. I just want to mess with the device (I'm a CS student @ UH). So, I chose the N900.
it took me a month and a half of research before i bought my n900.

the fact that "hacking is not REALLY needed for n900 to do more stuff because its open source" (i believe they call it Hacker Friendly) is the thing i liked mostly.

and i admit, i was feeling and saying "what the Hell is this???" when i first used the n900, but then i seem to catch up as days passes by using the device.

and for some people; i believe in my humble opinion, all devices has their up and downs. just cant seem to get it when people quits seeing a problem that there is a good way to solve it.

Obligatory on topic nicety:

Sorry the n900 didn't meet your needs. Blah, blah, blah. Good luck with your golden handcuffs!

Off topic hijacking caused by redundant, boring forum noise:

Love the handle, gabby131.

Every time I read or hear the word gabby, it always reminds me of this:

[Donkey and Shrek are looking at constellations in the night sky]
Donkey: So, uh, are there any donkeys up there?
Shrek: Well, there’s, um, Gabby, the Small and Annoying.
Donkey: Okay, okay, I see it now. The big shiny one, right there. That one there?
Shrek: That’s the moon.
Donkey: Oh, okay.

I think this forum should have aliases and we should all be issued a gabby#. I'm taking gabby151 for my nauseating, drunken rantings.

The n900 is not the all in one device like it claims to be and it has hardly any quirky or even certain basic app's so you cant have fault with the average user wanting to jump ship.

A decent set of app's should have been present from the get go. Portrait texting and bluetooth support should have been out of the hat if USB OTG was not possible.

Nokia don't seem to be in a hurry to fix anything with their updates. Apple deliver in this regard as long as its within their business principles.

That said, I think the best is still yet to come. I also believe that the n900 has an important place in the evolution of smart phones. I do agree with the user who advised users to buy devices after a year or so.

You say that apple listens to the users? I heard of an incident where a little girl got in trouble for suggesting improvements. =/

I think alot of the points the orginal op raised are valid. The bottom line is that alot of people are frustrated at the lack of support and development for the N900 by Nokia. Whilst internal Nokians suggest otherwise, most of us feel that Nokia have really let the consumer down with lack of public support for the device.

For most of us, the problem isnt the N900. The phone is impressive once out the box. Its probably the most advanced device ever made by Nokia.
However, the main problem is frustration and lack of patience. People are frustrated because nothing new has been released by Nokia direct within months. The whole Meego transition only adds to more confusion and frustration as N900 owners believe Nokia have switched focus and left the device as a door stop.

Patience is a virtue, but even Jesus would admit waiting for Nokia is like waiting for paint to dry. We all believe in this device and its potential, but not willing to wait a lifetime whilst Nokia's competitors release new and improved Smartphones.

Most of us just want some cool games, apps, content, widgets etc like the modern trendy consumer. We done our research, we never expected an Iphone but something similiar to the N97 at least.
I'm also tired of people saying the N900 wasn't targeted at everyone and that its an internet tablet. I challenge you to take a look at the orginal N900 marketing video thats pre-installed on your device and come to a conclusion on who Nokia are targeting lol.

In anycase i like my N900, im hoping Nokia fix up because i've got another 14months left on my contract.

14 months is enough time for Nokia to evolve the N900 right?
PM me in 14 months

i say 'fair enough'. if you don't like the phone, you're right to get rid. i've already advised several friends not to buy n900s. it took me about a year to find the right phone for me and all the time was being told i should just 'buy an iphone'. what i got was the best cross between a phone and a linux phone i could have hoped for, given the maturity of linux as a phone platform. it is perfect for me. i don't have a massive appetite for apps but i know people who do so for them, it's a much better fit.

personally, i feel people forget that the device should always be about What You Need It To Do otherwise you're quite likely to buy the wrong product.

i think a lot of people didn't quite understand that it was not-perfected product when they paid their dough and it must feel a bit disappointing. i've been using linux for years and am used to things not working, for a while. but they always do in the end.

i disagree with you on the point re: meego, though. it will become an incredible os, with work. and that's what linux is all about. two companies like nokia and intel have a lot to throw at it.

enjoy your new phone, man. i know a lot of people who love theirs. i'll be ssh'ed into my NAS and my router, on my n900.
