I have seen this kinda pad for the Motorola Milestone/Droid that seems pretty cool:

I don't know if it would be comfortable enough but at least you can avoid extra CPU/battery usage of other bluetooth devices.

It's possible to request availability for the N900 on this page:
http://sites.google.com/site/gamegri...s/request-form

I have asked for a black one with red buttons and a six-buttons layout (for CPS2 games).

Yes indeed. This actually looks nice, I might purchase one if they make it for N900.

So basically this device sits over the n900 keyboard.

Would this increase wear & tear on specific keys?

On the actual website, they do state that there is the possibility of wear and tear, as you speculate certain keys will be used more than they normally would (and in a more vigorous manner!).

In the F.A.Q. they say it's basically safe, but obviously if you play lots of hours the specific keys will suffer more than the rest.

This is a ridiculously simple concept that comes off very practical. For $20 I probably may considering picking one up.

Please complete the request form in the web page so they might decide to produce one of this for the N900.
