I have the phone since saturday, installed the extra-decoders support along with the newest Maemo (3.2010.02-8). And I get the same message when installing this Subtitles thing. My movieplayback in some movies is stuttering (other issue i know, but maybe related).

EDIT: Movieplayback was NOT related: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=39010

Sorry that i can't help you directly, subtitle support used to work for me earlier.

However, as a workaround you can use kmplayer or sib, with mplayer, that has subtitle support out of the box.

when using kmplayer the subtitles do work but the player itself is worse imo, mplayer works better. ie: the thumbs and the resume playback
