Or even... (Dun dun DUN!) CPW has been promised a batch with PR1.2 ready installed, and they can't let him have it until it goes on public release. Given the hitches they had on the update in the UK last time, they could be ironing that out now.

Or not.

Or the CPW staff have been told to 'say anything' to satisfy customers whose phone is delayed.

that could be the case lol. Really hope the pr1.2 is rolling out though. I am totally sick of this v.keyboard right now. Nokia ruined it after PR1.1 is rolled out. I made more mistakes with this keyboard and slower typing with capitalisation. Terrible!

yeah to be fair it was made out to him that this was something big and new but like i say monday will tell i spoke to hime again this afternoon and he said the wrong phone he went to collect WAS a N900 but not the version 2 that had been ordered for his account. so the plot thickens. ,He is on orange so i got to thinking is it a branded version of the handset.

True that^

However, he was also told his phone was "in" and when he got there it wasn't.

A few days later he got a call from them saying his phone was now ready for collection however it would be the Nokia N900 version 2. when he got to the store they told him that the wrong phone had been delivered
And then:

when he got to the store they told him that the wrong phone had been delivered and he would have to wait a few days longer. Reluctantly he said fine and went on to ask the difference between version 1 and 2 and the sales assistant didn't have a clue.

I'm going to go out on a limb and speculate here:

wrong phone + clueless sales assistant = version 2

When he was called and told that his phone was "in" the sales assistant looked at the thing, saw that it didn't look like a N900, and covered his *** for not doing his homework by thinking it must be a new version.

The good news may be that when his phone does come in it may in fact now be "version 3".

That is the version where Nokia decided to change it back to look like "version 1"

In production parlance, a "version 2" could be a minor build change. The numbering would be for internal use only.

The version change could indicate an upgrade or other change in certain components that makes models manufactured past a certain point different enough from prior models that they require different repair kits and instructions. At the same time, they would function identically.

Anyway just err to the side of reason here and assume there's neither a major revelation nor conspiracy going on.
