It's a port of CellWriter (http://risujin.org/cellwriter/).

Apart from making most applications crash after a while, the plugin works very well.

I'll package it once the bugs are fixed.
Will it recognize finger-written characters or do we have to use the stylus?

Hmm, that is what I expected, but I still have the virtual keyboard appearing rather than your cellwriter plugin.

I put the source and a deb file up on garage with the exact gconf commands for enabling and disabling.

https://garage.maemo.org/frs/shownot...elease_id=3531

For the next release, I am working on:
- Adding a menu entry in the settings app to enable and disable
- Making the enter button work in the browser
- Adding a setting for larger cells (aka finger mode)
- Figuring out why it crashes sometimes

Yes, it works with the finger. I just had to make the cells big enough and train it with my finger.

For me it required a reboot before cellwriter took over as virtual keyboard.

Yes, at the moment it is quicker to type a word with the keyboard but if it recognised whole words it would be much quicker. Is it feasible?

It is possible but is out of the scope of my current project because CellWriter only recognises single characters.

The only open source ocr engine I know of that could perhaps be adapted and trained to recognise handwritten words is ocropus. When I or someone else gets it to recognise handwritten words easily and with a good enough success rate, I will immediately make it work on my n900.

Ocropus is built for linux and has great python bindings, but like
Wikipedia says, "OCRopus also contains disabled code for a handwriting recognition engine which may be repaired in the future."

Looks way cool and I'll try it as soon as I get my N900 back.

I still miss Graffiti (v1) though... I'm not so fussed on 'real' letter recognition, Graffiti was fast and very accurate.

Found a problem!
When I restart the device, all the samples are gone and I have to teach it all over again.
