Is it possible to make claws-mail your default email program so when you click the contacts tab and use the shortcuts like "view inbox" or "new e-mail message" it will open to claws-mail?

Not yet; we're looking into how to do it, though.

I wouldn't be surprised if you just renamed the original e-mail app as root and linked claws to the original name, it might launch.

It might launch, but I'm pretty certain the connection to the status icon to the left still wouldn't work. So nothing is really gained (one could as well just install simple launcher or idea and get a startup icon on for claws-mail on the home screen)

It is possible I heard of some surten individual over at #maemo who manage to get the osso-email-client and replaced it with claws-mail.

Might want to check the #maemo logs... he might have said how he did it.
