I would like to suggest some kind of survey on this topic.
And to start I'll list applications I wanted and had troubles finding and installing.
1. Minimo for Nokia 770. Had some troubles finding X11 component.
2. SDICT. For some reason was not able to download Python library's for a long time.

Ruby. Forget trying to find it here, I google key words ruby rails and N800 and it gets me to a site that nicely tells how to install Ruby and more.

With 2 Nokia N800 updates since I bought it and 2 huge crashes not to mention the 2 times I installed EVERYTHING and found out the program SCREEN & ZSH messed up everything thus I had to do it all over again... PLUS this last time I install EVERYTHING and who knows what the problem was this time... WELL I TAPPED OUT and just have the basics now to SURF INTERNET & WATCH RECORDED TV at work. I am waiting until the next update then maybe I will have the energy to try installing some other stuff again.... Nokia 770 are lucky NO MORE UPDATES... it's been frustrating to say the lest.

One more thing.
I was not able to find any good working solution for viewing PDF files. Nothing is even close to what I had on my ancient Palm |||c. This is especially surprising when you'll compare 160x160 to 800x480 resolution.

Not even Evince?
I was able to read the entire Civil War comic book crossover using Evince as well as the latest Harry Potter book.

Evince is a little bit better than original PDF viewer, but the problem is the same. My main concern is that I need to magnify and it does not fit to the page width. There is no good way to browse around the page. May be I just have not configured something. When you need to go to the next page you should tap on the bottom link.
Excellent example of document reader for portable device is FBReader. It is so easy to read and to browse.

Even the standard PDF viewer on the 770 is usable. I've not gotten to installing Evince yet.

I've got a 240 page PDF document, with a small font, but kinda big margins. I'm not interested in 90 degree rotation as the text is hard to read across the long way, and it'd just be worse. So, i bring up PDF Reader. Document>Open and find it. Go to the current page by clicking on the number at the bottom. I then go to full screen by using the upper left hardware button. I then use the menu button, View>Zoom>Fit width. I then press the stylus on the screen and hold it to get a pop up menu - i select Zoom in as needed. I then drag the screen so the text is centered. To scroll, i use the down button on they 'joystick' pad. This doesn't go far enough. Get over it. At the bottom, i need to go to the next page, i hold the stylus down and select Next page. When you exit, it doesn't remember where you were, so i bring up Notes, and write down which document and page it was. In Notes, at least, you can use Recent to get back to this document.

Although i always note where i was when i'm done reading, i mostly put my 770 to sleep by putting on the case - without exiting. Then it's just ready to go. I seem to have enough memory to run this and other things.

It's not ideal, but the screen resolution is good enough, and it works. I'd much prefer that the joystick 'down' button went a whole screen with no overlap, and the 'right' button went to the next page without regard to zoom. Then, most of my reading could be done without the stylus.

So, the UI could be tweaked, and it'd be nice if it would save where you were in each file, and just came up there. Further, it'd be nice if you could open "recent" documents. Maybe Evince does all that. If it does, perhaps Evince could be the pre-installed PDF reader. Why not?

I'm not very comfortable with existing PDF solution. I've seen much better solution on my old PALM or pocket PC. I described the other way to deal with PDF files that I use on Nokia 770 in case that PDF is mostly text file.
