Ciao Bob. Please be very careful re. your roaming data whilst in Uk, I'm a bit concerned that you may be misinformed on the data charges (or lack thereof):
I had the opposite - but identical - scenario from 2006-2008: I had a Three UK prepaid SIM. This allowed me to use my UK data bundle (£10/GB IIRC) in Italy (amongst other countries where Hutchison/3 had their own network). This was possible under the "Three like home" promotion. That promotion was withdrawn last summer, so you can no longer use a data bundle from one country in any other country as far as I am aware.
I haven't looked on Tre.it for a while, so maybe a new promo has been launched that once again allows this? If so, I'd be grateful for any info you can give (specifically, is it a reciprocal arrangement!) ... a URL would do (my italian is just about up to reading small print in the T's & C's).
Either way, please be very careful to check that you are not in fact racking up huge roaming data costs - I may be totally wrong, but better safe than sorry !!
EDIT - I know that Three UK prepaid users still get a "free" data bundle with each cash topup (250MB to use within 1 month of the topup, IIRC), but I'm struggling to believe that this would apply to a Tre Italia SIM whether on prepaid or contract?

thanks for the explanation - interesting that Three UK withdrew the "3 like home" promo entirely but Tre.it still offer it. Can you also link to the prepagato tarrif you are on? I got a Tre.it SIM last year but didn't see any deal like 3Gb for 5 Euro (I just use standare data rates on prepaid when in Italy ... IIRC it's about 10 Eurocent per megabyte ... fine for my holiday needs!). If not, no probelm, I'll be able to find it on tre.it myself.
Good luck getting an app to nail up the operator ... couple of observations:
1. on my n900, the operator shows on all 4 home screens?
2. I assume you can't just set "network selection" to manual in your phone ettings (seems too obvious for you not to have tried it!)

new in the forum and happy new owner of this fantastic device.
I am currently using Three ITA as operator and as you may know there are no charges in UK for data under three.
The problem is that it recognize it as roaming so to have it "always connected" i would need to allow data roaming always with the most likely risk to switch into Orange or T-mobile.
Is there an app that allows to selct three UK and lock it?
I've searched allover but nothing really working.
Thanks a lot
Bob
