I know which I'd choose and it is exactly this which means a 'lack of apps' isn't actually a big deal at all...
You mean that you get to your computer then you will google for the exact address\street name (and tweak/refine the results) before you print/email the results to yourself?

But the LBS-app alternative only involves taking out your mobile phone and cilcking a 'I'm here' button before it displays a list of places available around you, usually sorted by the distance. Alternatively, the direction and distance can be represented as 3D icons overlay over live video feed from your camera, if the device has digital compass.

All true, I've so far only been tinkering online via a wi-fi connection.

As for the screen real estate issue, I think 800x480 is pretty much acceptable - my computer hooked up to an old plasma in my front room only runs 800 x 600 and I use that on a daily basis for googling, playing stuff off last.fm etc..

No I mean I'd pull out my fone and do exactly what I'd do on a computer: Google it.

Actually, I didn't. Until Flash Player 10 arrives, I can't even test my own Flash Builder 4 stuff since it's all FP10.

So saying that you have "all of the *.swf's" is rather misleading.

Regardless... this kind of thread has been done over and over. Even I'm starting to see the patterns.

Resolution isn't the only aspect to keep in mind, you also have to consider the physical display (3.5 inches in this case).

At the end of the day you have to go back to looking at this from a practical and realistic point of view..

Sure, having a 'full' linux machine in your pocket no doubt you can do everything you do on your desktop (and maybe more) when you're off and about. Perhaps even by relaying or offloading the work to other machines that you have wireless access to. It's practically unlimited.

But doesn't it matter how you do it? If it takes 1-2 minutes to do something that other phones can finish within seconds, don't they 'win' this particular use case?

ps: "pixel is pixel" doesn't tell the whole picture, unfortunately...

The ultimate app for me at this point in time is something that wld just check the exponential battery drain issue...it's so annoying! Why wld I have to use my device wiv 1/5th brightness all the time just to conserve battery?

Possibly, it's just that the thread that inspired this one seemed to be the equivalent of someone swapping a ferrari for a ford because the ford had fancy cupholders...

I agree that there are plenty of flash and marketing gimmicks that accompany of the apps' features, but there are good and justified functionalities for the LBS ones, at least.

Please elaborate..
The true physical measurement of the displayed font matters to your eyes. There are comfort limits to which most people are used to and these are used for printing standards. It doesn't matter if your 3.5" screen has a resolution of 1920x1080, you would probably resize your font to a comfortable size anyway (for most purposes).

Apple has been very good in this regard. I'm betting that when the iPhone 4 comes out with 960x480 screen, the physical default font size will not change. They will just be rendered sharper.
