Actually, I somewhat agree with the OP...

And I've done my research.

And I don't find many things daunting, as many non-linux users often do.

That being said, after evaluating my feelings towards the N900 AND talk.maemo, I realized that without talk.maemo I would feel pretty good about the N900.

I think talk.maemo and maemo.org are unparalleled as a community resource in the modern phone/tablet market, and certainly a vibrant forum -as far as many linux distros go.

I don't, however, enjoy the attitude propagated by some users. A point that I think ysss made on page 1 or 2 of this thread.

Honestly, if I were a corp. saboteur, I would probably use similar tactics of phony fanboy venom to poison the community. There are many longstanding highly intelligent members of this forum who have been reduced to rabid guard dogs, biting new members with circular logic and zero compassion for anything resembling a negative comment about the N900.

I think YoDude put it well when he said that some members have developed a "softmoric" attitude, picking on "freshman" and creating a very hostile environment.

Maybe next time someone forget,s or has never learned, forum courtesy, we can respond with more compassion.

OP: "N900 is too slow"
User: "Why do you say that? Maybe there's a part of the OS or software that isn't performing well for you, can you be more specific?"

Just like Nosa's response. "Do you have catorize installed?"

These kinds of responses further our community, whereas "Then sell your N900." do not.

Yes, I agree with Konceptz.

I have seen many threads in which users with just a LITTLE complaint about the N900 bent over backwords to say good things about it, then mentioned their complaint, only to have kneejerk defenders treat them like heretics. The default way of treating users should be with respect and sympathy. The thing about the kneejerk defenders is that they seem to be carrying on battles from elsewhere, so you see a kind of bitterness that has no apparent relation to the current situation because it is bitterness about other users who are not present or relevant.

Thank you Konceptz.

as for the point of this thread, the app manager is horribly slow. Even the most fan-tastic fanboy has to admit that. Lack of global portrait mode is a pain as well (yes I know all the tricks to do portrait mode, so don't start).

And the BIGGEST annoyance:

having to unlock the phone to raise the volume when i'm listening to music. Someone tried to justify this by saying that devices that let you change the volume while locked are "busted". I was like...wha?

Yep I do - thought that might be the cause, is that a known bug with catorize then? Pity, it's a great utility.

i think it's done so you can have the same shortcuts on different desktops, i.e. the phone

I forgot about that particular annoyance until this morning - and you're right, it drives me up the wall; my Cowon D2 is the same unless using RockBox (how I wish we could have a proper N900 port of that!)

Aha, so apparently there's a workaround (I should've guessed really..)

Holy Crap dude! I have had RC 1.2 on my phone for like a week and I never knew they fixed it! And it doesn't even require a press of the power button.

Thank you so much for pointing that out. You're my new hero.
