cpitchford's advice hasn't worked for me.
On my device now I can't run any applications, open any files/messages etc. Every time I attempt it the yellow error bar comes up saying 'Close Applications'. I should point out that this was happening before i tried the xterm commands post by cpitchford.
If i do have to flash the eMMC, I now have the problem that I can't get at any backup files I've got to export them and make them safe from the flash.

If you connect the device to a PC in mass storage mode you'll be able to access and copy backups from the backups folder; if you've setup SSH you can find the backups in /home/user/MyDocs/backups.
Before you start flashing everything, consider removing your SD card and see how the device behaves without it... That said, I think your only hope in this case is a complete reflash.
Anyone got a clue?
Cheers.
