Depends on which friend. I know of two or three who could really use the N900s' potential for work. But one is on Windows Mobile, the other is using a Droid (he doesn't do any work on it).

My other friend actually got the n800 before me, I remember talking with him about the n800 and n810. But he got burned by Nokia on the wpa applicant bugfix so he got an iPod Touch (he wishes he had some of the abilities the N900 has from time to time). Though he instead uses the iPod Touch and a netbook running Linux instead of the n800 now.

But no I would not and continue not to recommend the N900 to most people who ask me about it.

Nah, we're all machine engineers, I'm the only one that needs a tablet. Noone considered this device in my class before I bought it, they need a different kind of device.

it is a 'geek device'.

And most of my friends are not that kind of geek.

So, no.

I will recommand them Android phone (HTC EVO 4G) or iPhone if they need Smartphone.

Actually, I find most people do not need a smartphone.

Even Symbian is too complicated for them.

Depends on the friend, so I voted Yes.

I have a lot of friends that would struggle with anything more then a dumbphone. They would be a "no".

Everybody who said "yes" meant: "yes, but only to geeks"
and everybody who said "no" meant: "no, because it's only for geeks".

I wonder why? Before I've recently bought the N900, i used some windows mobile 6.1 devices and they were completely crap (because of the operation system). So, N900 is a god blessed device (from my point of view). Ok, i'm used to linux and that was the reason, why i immediately liked the N900.

However, i think, the Maemo's UI is pretty good and with the community's applications here from maemo.org (which u easily can install via the application manager) also a "normal" user would like the n900.

Is it just because of the IPhone and its millions of apps? So, I don't get it. Please tell me the things you don't like or "normal" users would NOT like about N900. I'm curious :-) Maybe, i still will discover all these things because i'm owning the n900 less than a week, i guess ;-)

Thanks,
nexus

Its an interesting series of answers and yes the question does depend on the geekiness of the person you are recommending it to, but just to reiterate this is a light hearted poll not really anything scientific.

Well yeah its because you are using it less than a week just wait and soon you will start to see some nasty surprises
Battery sometimes dies quicker that usual, calendar opens automatically ( though i read this bug is fixed in PR 1.2).
Lets say you install a lot of apps and soon device gets slower, root space becomes smaller and one day you cant even run app manager cuz there is not enough space ( happened to a lot of people) and the list goes on

You're just new , its OK but soon euphoric stage will be replaced by realty

Spot on!

A lot of the features this has don't properly work anyway - "portrait mode" only for phone functionality and sluggish at that

"Full flash player" means version 9 which can't handle flash video.

"Media player" means play/stop/skip with no equalizer, etc.

BUT I like the chat protocol functions. Still wouldn't recommend overall though - too many headaches and patient sighs as other OSes get better whilst fremantle stays still.
