The biggest thing that completely pisses me off with the repos is:

No description of what the app is/does. I know it can be a pain to explain what you app does, but if I don't see a description/explanation of it, I will not try it/install it.

Is it such a hard thing to do?

When I see this, I really think its such an unprofessional approach.

free software. Ain't it grand?

I think the "get involved" comment was the right one. That's what free/community/open development is all about.

Is this a real question or did you try to be funny?

I think this underlines one of the weakest component of oss/bazaar type development. Subjective elements of a project is hard to stardardize and things are driven by different motivations than commercial apps, where they need to satisfy the customers to gain the sale.

Commercial: "What do you need? I'll try to please you so I can make the sale."

OSS: "Here's what we got. If you're not pleased with it, you're welcome to contribute; otherwise please _________."

Hi Schettj,

Fair point about getting involved. I have no problem with that argument at all.

Not that I want to compare Maemo Repos to iTunes Apps Store, but there are alot of free apps there too, and they have half decent descriptions.

To reiterate: I am not for one minute comparing Maemon Repos to the Nazi_Stormtrooper_psycho_overcontrolling iTune store.

But, how am I supposed to write a description for something I don't know what it does?

Even a short one line "this app does this" would suffice.

Unless I am missing something?

thanks

The description is in English even though your device is set to German? Provide a German translation. That's easy and non-technical. So why don't people just do it?
On that note, is there a system to show multi-lingual descriptions based on locale? Or would they all go in one long description?

You can have multiple descriptions for one package. The application manager will show the one that matches the current locale, otherwise fall back to the standard description which is supposed to be english.

and... i'd like to add and to underline... that we dont have to provide a description for the apps. when i'll compile one application, i'll add a valid description for it. i think that maemo repos havent to have generic descriptions in some apps, the maemo community should cut out the repos all the apps that are with misunderstandable or generic comments
