I was under the impression that BT required low energy consumption but it seems that when tethered to my N800 to create an internet connection the battery on my Moto V3xx drains rather quickly.. obviously this leads me to believe that the data transfer required to provide a net access point to my N800 is draining battery from my phone..

I guess I'm curious if this happens to everyone.. if not then how can I start troubleshooting this issue?

Bluetooth is very low power... chances are something else other than Bluetooth is causing the battery to drain - is the phone sluggish/unresponsive when connected to your N800? Perhaps a process is running on the phone which is consuming CPU cycles thus draining the battery.

I don't know, I always remember even having bluetooth enabled on my phone or paired with my headset caused it to eat battery more quickly than if it was just sitting around idle without bluetooth. Plus 2.5 and especially 3g connectiongs have a tendency to rape battery life.

this is the same thought i had but i only experiencr shorter batt life when tethered thru bt for net connection.

I guess i'll have to buy a charger to keep at work heh

The phone is going to consume more power with Bluetooth enabled than with Bluetooth disabled but on the whole Bluetooth is quite efficient and shouldn't make a dramatic difference which is what the OP is suggesting is happening.

3G for sure eats batteries for lunch.

I guess you are also maintaining a data connection all the time while Bluetooth is established... what kind of data connection do you have on your plan? a 3G call/connection may use power more quickly than a 2G GSM/GPRS connection (unless 3G has some power saving tricks up it's sleeve) in which case it's probably not the Bluetooth connection that's draining the battery but the phone-to-carrier connection (which is a by product of the Bluetooth connection).

How long would your phone battery last if you were to establish a voice call and not hang up? 3-4 hours?

To take the phone-to-carrier connection out of the loop, establish an OBEX (file transfer) Bluetooth connection between your N800 and phone and see if you observe the same rapid power drain on the phone.

After observing my usage I think its the massive amount of data transmitted through the 3g connection... bluetooth would just be the medium i guess but not the culprit.
