I just got a used E815 from Ebay. Called Verizon to replace my old phone with E815. No problem. They even waived the $20 activation fee. This is the easy part.
Now the hard part. I realized that ##DIALUP hack doesn't work for my phone because of the updated firmware. Mine is 1.10E. From research, I found that I needed a USB cable to hack the phone or downgrade the firmware to 1.17 to enable DUN. I was going to order the cable but couldn't wait.
More research showed that I can do BT DUN using XP without hacking by disabling all CHAP authentications, which gave me some hope realizing that there's a /etc/ppp/option in Nokia 770. To achieve this, E815 requires disabling EVDO by entering test mode.
First, I paired the phone with my BT laptop to see whether BT DUN is working. Next, using text editor in Nokia, I allowed PAP but disabled CHAP by editing /etc/ppp/option.
Then I paired the phone w/ 770. Made a new connection the connection manager.
BTW, I don't have any data plans (BBA, Vcast, Mobile Web) from Verizon. It's just eating my minutes (MOU). I'm not using EVDO but using 1x at 130kbps speed. I'm pretty happy now.
