so does the dnsmasq.conf change help?
I was scanning through bugzilla and came across the same bug as you did #7239 . apparently it sorts out the name resolution for local entires without needing you to add the .local in the hostname.

@depu - if i alter the /etc/resolv.conf and put my dns gateway everything works including external internet and intranet. Will give dnsmasq change a go after breakfast ;-)

@9000 - yes prefs.js does reflect the change (i rebooted the device).

Good to know.
if you do manage to set the nameservers using the script provided on the bug , please post back into the bug id with your updated script, it'll help someone else later.

@gurpal2000, You need to find out what DNS server your phone is using the resolve hostnames.

BTW, are expecting the router to resolve those hosts?
If so, maybe the n900 is not asking it!

On a ubuntu machine, I would check resolv.conf but on N900 I have also discovered that "127.0.0.1" in resolv.conf, telling me nothing.

durp / 9000 : Any of you know how to check at a given moment what is my dns server?

Type 'nslookup localhost' and the DNS server you're using will be shown.

@depu - CONFIRMED fix in bug #7239 worked

Workaround: comment out line "domain-needed" in /etc/dnsmasq.conf

At least i can put a comment on bug #7239. I don't want to criticise Maemo/Nokia/etc for this because they're doing a great job. I still believe the N900 rocks over any similar device !

@9000 - nslookup localhost returns 127.0.0.1. We probably need to take a look at the dnsmasq logs

Yes looks like its a deliberate setup made.
From the comments in a defult dnsmaq.conf file
The following two options make you a better netizen, since they
# tell dnsmasq to filter out queries which the public DNS cannot
# answer, and which load the servers (especially the root servers)
# uneccessarily. If you have a dial-on-demand link they also stop
# these requests from bringing up the link uneccessarily.
# Never forward plain names (without a dot or domain part)
domain-needed
# Never forward addresses in the non-routed address spaces.
bogus-priv
So the change might cause a drop in the battery levels in case there are frequent dns requests on your network.

Right, but dnsmasq itself is a caching dns server so why would this reduce battery life ??
