Im curious how you would repair a dead cpu? Yes I know its possible with a hot air rework station and a new part but is it a economic way of repair.

Also where are you going to get a new CPU?

I often see faulty phones such as the iPhone on ebay selling for ridicules amounts of money, maybe only saving $150 on a working unit. I saw one the other day that had been dropped in salt water and it was over $300, tell me that's ever going to be repairable, the insides will be totally corroded.

So Im wondering if the people who buy faulty phones with the intent of repairing them actually do or just hope there going to be lucky and get it working by rubbing it on there shirt or something.

Just wondering why do people here call the phone's processor a CPU? 0.o they're totally 2 different things

Phone's processor in this N900 is a CPU.
Central Processing Unit

How do you defind a phone's processor as then?

What is the job of the Phone's processor?
How is it becoming two difference things?

You may ask Mr. google for this. Or your wife lol.

I thought the processor was the cpu plus a couple of registers, or something like that.

Yes something like this
Ti OMAP3430 is a CPU where it does not work alone, but it will work with other hardwares (motherboard, RAM and Flash Memory).

is it that easy to overclock your cpu to 1ghz? I tried it at 850mhz, it worked but would occasionally restart itself. i set it down to 750 and it still restarted itself, i was just listening to music too. I just gave up and set it to stock with under voltage.

Am I one of the few unlucky users with crappy cpu or is it something else

I had the same problem - self restarts after enabling the oc kernel (also at the default setting 600Mhz) after the OTA Update for PR1.2.
What I had to do is to reflash the device with the PR1.2, installing the oc kernel, configure the max frequency in /etc/pmconfig and the n900 was able to run at 900Mhz without problems.

This is the beauty of overclocking -- you are basically custom-shaping the clocking to your individual cpu. CPUs are not exact things, they meet certain tolerances and may vary within those tolerances. Manufacturers are conservative and make sure that the cpus overfulfill what they are designed for, so it is normal that cpus can be overclocked to a certain extent -- it's just a question of how much.

If you read Jakiman's overclocking guide (linked to from the Overclocking Wiki) you will see his estimate of what percentage of N900s can overclock to what extent. Although his estimate was pure guesswork, it seems to have been surprisingly accurate.

So the answer is that your cpu may well have been "crappy" unless you inadvertently made your N900 crash for some other reason.
