The file you downloaded are in compressed format. If you are not comfortable with the x-terminal and/or running commands off it; I would suggest you do the following:

1. copy your downloaded file to the PC(assuming you run Windows)
2. get 7-zip or similar to decompress the file at your PC
3. transfer the decompressed file sets back to the N900

good luck

I've downloaded a dictionary, but I can't untar the file - are there any step-by-step instructions? What I've been trying is:

tar -xv stardict-comn_sdict05_eng_eng_main-2.4.2.tar.bz2

but it never does anything.

either do it on your PC or rename the file and remove stardict- and use
Code:
tar -xvjf new_fname.tar.bz2

Just in case you missed that, you need to download the stardict format and not the XDXF.
On your other post, you seem to have downloaded the correct format.

Hope it's useful.

FINALLY!!! I was getting frustrated...anyway my mistakes were that I downloaded them in .xdxf first...WRONG!! then I corrected and dowloaded the stardict but decompressed them with winzin or 7-zip...WRONG!!!
SO...you have to download them in stardict format and WINRAR them!! and there you go...now they work!! yay!!

Hello,
thanks guys now it works.

The trick is as follows (implemented on PC)
1 - got to http://xdxf.revdanica.com/down2/
2- select your dictionary
3- slect download format Stardict
4- extract it with WinRAR.
5- some dictionaries have 2 links. e.g. stardict-comn_sdict05_eng_arabic-2.4.2.tar.bz2 and stardict-comn_sdict_axm05_eng_arabic-2.4.2.tar.bz2. in this case select the one with _sdict_axm05
6- copy the 3 files .dz, .idx and .ifo to your N900 mstardict directory
