Coming from the iphone, one of the features I really miss is being able to toggle between 'silent' and 'general' profiles by flipping a hardware switch.

Is there any solution to implement this on the N900? One idea I had would be to reprogram the 'power' button to toggle profiles if it is held down for N seconds when the device is locked (and vibrate or something to notify user of profile change. I do not use the power button for locking/unlocking the phone so something like this would be ideal for me

I would try and implement something my self, but I have no idea where to begin on developing something like this.

My package longpress allows for that, by holding lock key for two seconds. See short explanation here:

Does this also unlock the device in the process? Is there some user feedback to let me know that it successfully switched profiles?

I'll check it out

Alright, I gave this a shot. It's close, but not quite what I was looking for.

It would be perfect if it was possible to monitor the power button (when the device is locked) and act on that, or even the camera button when locked (but there is nothing in dbus messages when camera button is pressed and device is locked)

The reason I do not like using the side lock key is because it also unlocks the device, and I have to really hit it twice if I want to change the profile. Once for 2 seconds to change profile, and once quickly to re-lock the device. I was able to add signals to dbus to vibrate the phone when applying profiles though through your script.

Does anyone have any information on how I could listen to either the camera button or power button and act on that?

It should not unlock the device.

Here's what I happens when I press the key for two seconds while device is locked:

The device unlocks (screen lights up) immediately when I press the key. After holding it for two seconds, profile toggles, and the device locks again (screen turns dark). I release the key and the device remains locked.

If you see something else, please describe exactly what you see.

Actually, I guess you're right. I must have been doing something wrong (maybe pressing it again after two seconds because I saw it unlocked initially?)

I suppose it would not be possible to prevent it from unlocking even briefly?
