my 770 is from expansys uk too. no problem so far, been using maemo mapper - havent test it with a gps retriever though.
if it starts acting strange after installing something (maemo mapper for example), u can try to uninstall it
(also delete all maps) and then install again. change the path of the maps (in maemo mapper) to your mmc instead of using the internal memory as the mapsize can get very large.
you can install the system-monitor-plugin to monitor the cpu usuage, etc. which i think is helpful.

This was discussed just few days ago, try searching again. Maemo mapper simply fills your flash and the system has a tough time with no free space left. Solution is to set maemo mapper to store maps on mmc card, not internal flash.

I wanted Mapper for travel and I am I do not have it. I have tried all the suggestions listed above (have the Maps on the MMC etc.) Still went in to a reboot problem. Still going strong without Mapper

I have a similar infiite-reboot problem, happened with mapper and/or vnc viewer installed. Trying to isolate it, currently requires reflashing every couple days.
