Hehe we have all been there (Some of us still are!) - unfortunately as you will learn, the N900 is a hands on phone - you will never learn it all ,but you will soon learn where to look to get some quick answers.

As a general rule of thumb the search function on the forums is rubbish, but google it and the right page normally appears at the top (Or used the advanced search).

Also, as the phone is second hand, i'd probably learn how to flash the device (Reset it back to factory settings'ish) - its a good thing to learn early on and will give you a sexy fresh new pr 1.2 device

(Flashing etc is on the wiki! - imagine it as re-formatting / starting again, by putting a fresh install on it - and erm, you will need a pc :P hehe)

I downloaded the flasher for OSX, installed it, its gone, cannot find it anywhere? I am lost on that one? I was using the instructions from here http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_firmware Unless I am missing something? I installed the file on the .dmg, said is was successfully installed on my Mac.. now I have no idea where it went or how to use it? Ill keep looking into how to reflash?

I typed in the x-terminal to check my rootfs says

Size 227.9M
Used 169.3M
Available 54.4M
Usage 76%

Seems like a lot is used, this sound about right?

Now... how to clean it up & will this allow me to run the update :-D

Similar threads have a list of conflicting stuff if you search. Non-3D apps can also use libraries that conflict with the update - brainparty for one. Basically just uninstall stuff (weirdest first) until the update works. And temporarily disable the non-nokia/ovi repositories from within application manager. That'll also free up space. Stick with uninstalling - reflashing or using PC suite is generally more of a chore.

i think over the air 1.2 worked for me with about 90Meg free, so you shouldn't be far off. if these are your numbers AFTER freeing up rootfs then yes you have high usage. wouldn't worry too much though its a common problem, uninstall apps your not using (or just reinstall large ones after the update) look into the apt-get clean and apt-get autoremove commands (i wont blindly eccomend these without some research, apparently there can be problems, although i haven't encountered them when i use these commands) and see how much you can free. sorry cant help with flashing on a mac i'm afraid...

ITS WORKING :-D I did have brainparty on there??? I missed it the 1st time. I deleted a lot of stuff.... so see how it works.

I was having problems playing video before the update, my girlfriends played the same files, but we put them on after the update, so I am hoping mine will work once the update is done.

I have been using different linux based handhelds for emulation, GP2X..ect... So i know the hassle of the linux stuff... well.. not hassle, just a bit more involved. Just the N900 is all new to me :-)

Ill post an update once its done.. updating

lol i think hassle was the right word, but it makes it seem more worthwhile once you actually get something working!

have fun.
