Hi all,

Back in April, someone on this forum was nice enough to package up the necessary binaries for pptp vpn support on the N800.

This requires installing both the pptp client, as well as a modified kernel, which has mppe support compiled in.

Unfortunately, that person never released a new kernel compatible with the 4.2007.26 release of maemo.

I really really like skype/SIP support, and so I don't want to have to go back to the old N800 software. However, as things stand, I can't use the VPN (which is required for wifi at my university). A internet tablet without wifi is not very useful.

Thus - can someone with cross-compiling skills please compile a kernel with mppe support, and make it available?

I can't offer much, but I will at least offer $10 (via paypal) to the first person that does it. Perhaps others who need pptp vpn support will also throw a few bucks your way.

Thanks

Unfortunately I no longer have access to a suitable development machine (at least, I won't for a month or so, moving across the country) but I would gladly walk someone through the process.

It's actually extremely simple to do, assuming you're on a Debian-based system or already have a working copy of Scratchbox/Maemo set up.

Well, I already have such kernel for N770 http://fanoush.wz.cz/maemo/#pptp
and there is no problem to make it for N800 too. Just nobody asked so far. I did it few minutes ago, check the url above.

Kernel contains enabled crypto API, extended brightness patch and mmcplus stuff from http://intr.overt.org/blog/?p=54

For pptp you need to insert extra modules as described on the page. It shouldn't be a problem to do it in some script before you call pptp client. You'll probably make some script with pptp client call anyway.

As for the bounty - I didn't do it for the money so even if it solves your problem there is no need to pay anything. If you want to send something then see the bottom of http://fanoush.wz.cz/maemo/

Just to complete the answer:

After installing and getting pptp to work, you can use the package
dbus-scripts (see here http://www.mail-archive.com/maemo-de.../msg06634.html
) to automate connection.

Create file called /etc/dbus-scripts.d/dbus-pptp (or any name you wish in that directory) containing the lines

/path/to/pptp-start-script * * com.nokia.icd * tsunami * CONNECTED
/path/to/pptp-stop-script * * com.nokia.icd * tsunami * IDLE

(replacing tsunami with your wifi network name), and whenever you connect to the wireless network (by manually using the connection manager, or automatically) pptp will connect.

Hi pptp guys, just to let you know that I have uploaded new version of kernel and modules based on latest Nokia rx-34-2.6.18-osso55 kernel source so SD/MMC corruption bugfix is included.

http://fanoush.wz.cz/maemo/#pptp
http://fanoush.wz.cz/maemo/4.2007-kernel-crypto.tar.gz
http://fanoush.wz.cz/maemo/4.2007-modules.tar.gz

Again there is high-speed 48Mhz SD/MMC mode enabled and extended birghtness control patch. Modules now have reiserfs included.
