This is not (and will not) be possible.

Calling and the cell network is handled by the 'phone' itself and there is only a basic API to call phone functions from Maemo. The phone adjusts automatically to local surroundings, power transmission, which cell to use, etc. Being a Nokia it should be good at this, as they are traditionally strong in this area. From my experience the N900 seems to be good, but I think most of the other guys have caught up with Nokia in this department now anyway.

Getting a new sim card is a good start

It's not the signal strength of mine that's the problem, it's the tendency of it to lose all signal for several minutes at random intervals without any change in position, orientation, etc. Wish i knew what would fix that.

Classic example of arbitrary Nokia decision making. Couldn't just fallback to the no brainer of tagging with lat/lon if network isn't accessible, could you Nokia?

I am sure that this is not a Tmobile problem, as I never experienced this with my n95. I did however, experience something very similar with my old ipaq years ago and it was resolved through a firmware upgrade.

For now, I just use the 2g/3g applet to poll the network manually when i lose service and it finds it again. This seems to be an issue of the dual mode functionality - it will not find automatically find a strong 3g signal as often as it should in my experience

boosting the signal is easy. just carry a large steel salad bowl with you, point it in the direction of the cell tower, put the phone in the focal point of the bowl. DONE.

I have answered your question and all past and future questions regarding boosting the signal strength.

Hmm still, two of us on T-mobile with the same problem. Maybe it is T-mobile--wouldn't know as i was on Verizon before.

Voted and read the descriptions of the problem there and found them identical to my experience.

It is def NOT tmobile as none of my other phones have exhibited the same behavior. If I manually reset the connection using the 2g/3g applet it will pick up the network again right away. It seems that it just doesn't search as often as it should - battery saving feature maybe?

EDIT: Everyone else please jump on this bug and vote as well!!

yes i get exactly the same problem, in work i have poor signal, most of the time, if it looses signal, it wont find it again, even if i leave work and retrn to great coverage area, but changing from one frequency to another and back again manually will instantly give me full bars. definately a problem with the phone not the network
