I don't know the solution, but the work around can be, add contacts to your desktop and then you can IM them.

I have mine setup where my contacts and skype contacts are merged, so when I see a skype contact on, my contact on the phone book is green.

It happened to me as well.....Log out/log in helped to fix it in my case....One time even after logout/login, it was really slow to display online contacts.....
