when it comes hopping onto this linux from s60 phones. There's a few things that just seem to irk me (like it seems to bother quite a bunch of other people as well...) BUT the beauty comes in the form of people constantly developing applications to rectify these issues.

I've hit search, i've looked around, and i've found a few things, but just some overall questions i have:

1. Does anyone's text ringer sometimes change? not like the text sound changes because i'm in the conversation, i understand that... but the phone will not play the ringer i selected (which is still a nokia designated tone) but something like a "someone's on the other line calling" tone. which leads me to

2. Is it me or are the tones that represent an incoming call vs. an incoming msg/email very close in sound? I dont EVER remember thinking that on the e71.

3. Is there any way to improve the sound quality without increasing the size of the earhole? I'm STRUGGLING with sound. it just does not work for me.

4.Does the audio widget not work for anyone else? it'll work fine, then i'll get a phone call (which means it'll stop) and then when i'm off the phone, i can't restart it from the widget. It only seems to work like that when i'm attached via headphones of some sort. Maybe I'm missing something.

5. No ascending ringer/ multiple ringer/ name reader fix yet correct? That espeakcaller thing... no thanks.

6. someone PLEASE PLEASE tell me how the hell you manage your battery. I'm far from a power user (even making the effort to stay on edge all day) and I'm STILL struggling with this battery usage. It's not like i'm sitting with 30 apps open, my gps running and constantly searching for wifi. I have autodisconnect running and it still doesn't seem to help. I've read the make your battery last longer thread... it just doesn't seem to work in my situation.

7. Finally (because i hate sounding like i'm *****ing all day) What happened to being able to type part of a contact's name in the address field and hitting send to send a text? Do i really have to wait for the address book to open ALL of my contacts? once again I'm fairly new to this (I never ended up using my n810 lol) so I figure someone around here would know.

I'm not even trying to bash the phone, it's just some minor things that i was so comfortable with on the e71 I miss dearly.

Thanks for going thru my rant.

I tak it you mean that call volume from the earpiece varies between barely audible and near as damn it silent. Do you get decent volume when selecting speakers? If so, there is a known hardware fault on this and I'd suggest returning the device to Nokia for replacement/repair.

1. No. Doesn't change for me.
2. Agreed. I end up checking visually to see. This should be fixed.
3. I dont have problems with sound quality. Hardware fault maybe?

.
5. No can do.
6. Welcome to the N900!
7. This works for me fine. For SMS and email. I just type the few letters of a person which are unique to that person and the N900 does the rest.

You have a lot of questions.

I'll cherry pick a few of those if you don't mind.

1. Does anyone's text ringer sometimes change? not like the text sound changes because i'm in the conversation, i understand that... but the phone will not play the ringer i selected (which is still a nokia designated tone) but something like a "someone's on the other line calling" tone.
I think I've seen (heard, really) this happen too. Not quite sure what it is. If I recall correctly, there might be also a bug report about this.

3. Is there any way to improve the sound quality without increasing the size of the earhole? I'm STRUGGLING with sound. it just does not work for me.
I can manage it, but the correct spot for holding it against your ear is sometimes a bit hard to find. Turning volume all the way up helps.

4.Does the audio widget not work for anyone else? it'll work fine, then i'll get a phone call (which means it'll stop) and then when i'm off the phone, i can't restart it from the widget. It only seems to work like that when i'm attached via headphones of some sort. Maybe I'm missing something.
The audio widget has been somewhat problematic. Usually it works on me, if I tap on it enough many times. ;-)
Mostly I use it to just start up the media player (which seems to require a double click on the widget nowadays..?)

6. someone PLEASE PLEASE tell me how the hell you manage your battery. I'm far from a power user (even making the effort to stay on edge all day) and I'm STILL struggling with this battery usage. It's not like i'm sitting with 30 apps open, my gps running and constantly searching for wifi. I have autodisconnect running and it still doesn't seem to help. How much battery life are you getting?

The battery obviously isn't that great, it's possible to run that down with a only few hours of continuous use. When you're not doing anything with it, it should hold up quite good.

A good start on understanding what's eating your battery is to install one of the two battery monitoring apps (BatteryGraph, battery-eye). They're also useful for finding out if something is draining up your battery unexpectedly.

7. What happened to being able to type part of a contact's name in the address field and hitting send to send a text? Do i really have to wait for the address book to open ALL of my contacts?
You can type in a part of contact's name, then hit the button to open the address book for recipients, it shows only contacts who match the part you have typed in.

Also, if you are on the desktop, you can just start typing the contact's name, the address book will open with matches on what you typed, and you can select a contact, and choose send SMS from there.

I hope these are of some help.

This is a feature, if you have the text message open and you get another text, you get another sound like you're chatting to someone on skype, hence the fact the text messaging is designed in a conversation format.

Obviously if you're in another app with it open or the screen goes off then the set ringtone will play.
