You are stating what is already known.

The instructions (most of them) in the post by elektr00n worked for me. The apt-get stuff would not work, but I was able to install anyway. Install rootsh first.

Okay, here is a step-by-step how to:
- go to programmanager, install rootsh and uninstall firfox/fennec
- in programmanager go to cataloge and disable the "Ovi" and the "Mozilla multi Catalog" if existent
- if you did not have the "Mozilla multi Beta Catalog" visit http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/m/beta
Maybe the install works, if not go on - close the programmanger elsewise the apt-get commands won't work
- open an xterm
- enter command: sudo gainroot
- enter command: apt-get clean all
- enter command: apt-get update
- enter command: apt-get install fennec (you can also try to install via programmanger)
- now you can safly enable the ovi catalog again in programmanger
