Mameo 5's Lack of Vsync is truly a last straw for me.

I have always noticed that transitions and scrolling are not a smooth as what I have seen on the (dramatic music) iphone.

I don't want an iphone. Will never get one... but lack of vsynch and the tearing that you get when scrolling throuhg desktops is unnaceptable...and if you read the bug report Nokia is refusing to fix this bug. Apparently GPU needs a new driver and the driver is only coming to Meego, not Maemo.

So this is half rant half question. Any chance the commmunity can fix this?

It's a driver issue, so I don't think it will happen unless PowerVR releases the code of their drivers(highly unlikely).

The animations/transitions on the iPhone are amazing and the only thing better (IMO) than the n900. Too bad Nokia cant (won't?) update the SGX driver to add Vsync anytime soon. I think it would make a lot of users very happy and offset alot of the "not polished" conceptions of the device. Screen tearing is annoying and should not be present on a high end device like this.....but it is my only complaint=)

Bear in mind the iphone up until 4 used a lower res screen so therefore they would be smoother due the smaller resolution it has to render on.

nope it doesnt matter at all, its an issue and screen resolution has nothing to do with it , new iPhone is even higher and all high end androids have same resolution ( droid by motorola is the closest in specs with N900 )

I agree its very annoying the only fix might be in the MeeGo for N900

afaik gpu drivers are ready

I am really happy with maemo 5 and don't have any need/desire to run meego....I just wonder if they can release the drivers for Maemo5. Given my experience w nokia (since the 770) I realize this is a pipedream=(

Any chance the info here can be used to build a less sucky video driver to eliminate the tearing? It is for OMAP 35xx but it has the same SGX530 graphics chip.....In the comments they talk about tearing but it doesn't sound exactly like our issue.

I'm glad I am not the only frustrated by this. Things like lack of voice dialing I can live with, but lack of a graphics driver without vsync is an absolute insult.

i looked into this issue as i wanted to know if its a hardware- or a software problem.

the only other phone that contains a high res screen (852x480) togheter with omap 3430 is Motorola Droid (that i know of)

and apparantly the 2.1 update of android (that was released last year) for Motorola Droid ENABLES vsync. atleast thats what people claim on the internet.

so i guess it means the N900 should be up to the job as well.

if we dont get vsync for Maemo5 - it will be an essential feature of Meego.

PS. lack of vsync can be particularly disturbing while playing games or watching movies while being connected to the big screen tv.
