You probably misunderstood what "pushing it out to devices" means. Most likely they meant just "making it available for devices through Ovi store".

The mechanism through which something could be pushed is having an application as dependency to another package (e.g. regional metapackage). Please check "apt-cache rdepends fifaschedule" on your xterm. I tried it on mine, and there were no dependencies.

There is also a log available in Application Manager, check the menu.

Theoretically, this might be because of current problems with n900 & Ovi store. Let's see if we get news about them soon.

If you are really paranoid, you can use only apt-get to install packages. It will always show the full explanation of what will be done. Apart from application manager, there is no "back door" that Nokia would be using to remote control your device. And for application manager, the source code is available at gitorious.

if proven to be 3rd parties dumping unsolicited executables on your device in collusion with Nokia then I think our Finnish friends have jut shot themselves in the (other) foot. Marketing monkey madness.

No such thing is being done - Neither KA consulting or Nokia is consciously involved with activity like this. If this is actually happening (because so far it's an unproven rumor), it's because of a bug somewhere (possibly Ovi repository - it's currently broken for N900 anyway).

Why don't you just uninstall this stuff?

You have missed the point entirely. Nokia/Partners should not be remote installing software on users' devices without permission!

But that is not the problem here. Anybody can of course uninstall applications, with no problem. At least I believe you should, if you buy a smart phone like N900. The problem here is (once again) somebody doing something with YOUR device without your consent or agreement.

If this case is more than just a rumor.

actually we have one claim, zero facts and need for further information (logs,...) before we can do any asumptions....

I just called KA Consulting and spoke to Mr. Kong, who was kind enough to spare a few moments of his time to look into this issue and provide me with some of his (I assume) unofficial comment.

According to Mr. Kong, they do have an application called "FIFA Schedule" which is currently under the QA process to be published to the OVI store. But as far as he's concerned, no end users should know about the existence of that application at this point because it's not supposed to be officially out yet, let alone for it to be automatically pushed for download.
He even thought that I was a Nokia employee at first, for mentioning that application.

Btw, according to Mr. Kong the application will be free of charge and they will not use any schemes to automatically push-install it to N900s. Yes, users will have to select and manually download the app from Ovi Store just like any other apps there.

So he's going to get in touch with his Nokia contacts to ask about this problem. Actually, he sounded as surprised/confused as we are about what's going on here.

So Nokia, what gives?

ysss - thank you for confirming this. my only problem is i have uninstalled the application so unless someone can point me to logs, i won't be able to provide any screenshots or URL.

when I spoke to KA Consulting, the lady mentioned that the application is in beta. and as you said, nobody should know about it. but i saw it on my phone. i googled for

+"FIFA Schedule" +N900

and nothing turns up other than what i have posted here and in the nokia malaysia forums. so there's no public URL where it is available. furthermore, because i use catorise, i'm giving the benefit of the doubt to that application that it has correctly categorized FIFA Schedule into the "Ovi" folder / group, which leads me to believe this could have been pushed out somehow via Nokia.
